After 2 successful events, a third showcase will be held in January
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Two Gay Life expos in 2009 drew hundreds to the Hilton Garden Inn to learn about the gay and gay-friendly in the borough and beyond, so a third showcase will be held at the Bloomfield hotel on Jan. 24.
Local and national merchants will set up display tables from 1 to 5 p.m. The Expo is free to the public and includes many give-aways and goodie bags, information and a raffle of airline tickets and other items. There will be a tea dance from 5 to 9 p.m., featuring a DJ and live entertainment, drinks and refreshments for $10.
"It's important for the gay community to know they do have support from the businesses on Staten Island and they're welcome," said the event host, Annette Silvestro of Passages VaGAYtions, a division of Majors Travel in West Brighton.
"It's important for Staten Island to realize that we do have gay people on Staten Island," said Ms. Silvestro, claiming the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community here numbers more than 50,000.
With the interest the Expos have generated in creating a community of gay friendly businesses, Ms. Silvestro said, she has partner with Rev Carmen Hernandez, President of NYC LGBT Chamber of Commerce that will soon start a chapter in Staten Island a NYC LGBT Chamber of Commerce Chapter staten Island. So communication and event planning can take place all year long.
Among the more than 20 businesses already signed up for the Expo are Victory Staten Bank, Verizon Wireless of Forest Avenue, Staten Eyeland, Safari Realty, Island Upholstery, Sam T. Gregorio Florist, Manfredi Suburu and Dolphin Fitness and the NYC LGBT Chamber of Commerce, Inc.
Vendor tables are still available for $400, or $350 for past participants & for NYC LGBT members & Partners. The hotel runs a shuttle to and from the ferry, for visitors from other boroughs.
