Blueberry Pie

Blueberry Pie

This pie is one of my favorites because you can really taste the fresh blueberries. You won't even have to turn the oven on. This is a great dessert to take to a BBQ; it travels really well and is quick and easy.

INGREDIENTS:

1 8-inch Graham cracker pie crust
1 pint of fresh blueberries
1 small jar red currant jelly
Whipped cream

Rinse and pat dry freshly washed blueberries. Put them into the crust.

In a small saucepan over low heat, melt the jelly. Pour the melted jelly over the blueberries.

Refrigerate for at least an hour.

Serve with a dollop of real whipped cream. (Cool Whip... only if you must!)

Bathing Suits

Swimsuit shopping is where the rubber hits the road when it comes to loving your body. It's a Master's course in self-acceptance.

Beach

I have yet to meet any woman who just can't wait to hit the mall, find a great bathing suit from the tangled masses, step into a tiny, florescent-lit fitting room and look at herself in a funhouse mirror. No matter WHO you are, it's hard to do.

Let's all decide just to get over ourselves and go for it. Every body deserves to go to the beach! And we're all in this together.

Time for a summer refresher on a few very important LDG ("Looking DAMN Good") Rules:

LDG Rule #1
Don't talk fresh about your body; it's listening.

LDG Rule #2
It's NEVER about size; it's ALWAYS about attitude.

LDG Rule #3
Three pieces make an outfit. A bathing suit is not an outfit until you add some great "go-withs" -- a sarong wrap, beautiful, breezy tunic, or light cotton cover-up. I love finding a great straw hat and big sunglasses -- very retro 40's Hollywood! Finish off your LDG beach look with a fun pair of flip-flops or an open-toe wedgie.

Let that great LDG attitude prevail as we pack up our beach bags with a good summer read, (like MY book, for example), and lots of sunscreen as we grab our sand chairs and head for the beach.

I'll save you a spot under my umbrella!

Some swimsuit shopping alternatives for you
My professional opinion is that anyone over the age of 30 ought to stay away from the department store swimsuit racks altogether.

Liberty VillageOne of my favorite shops for beachwear is Swim and Sweat, 39 Stangl Road, Liberty Village in Flemington, (908) 788-0882. (Oh, and they have the cutest flip-flops!)

Or, give your self a break and avoid the whole fitting room drama and shop from home. I've found the very best source for swimsuits is Lands' End. Their sizing is extensive and user-friendly, with lots of styles organized according to what will flatter your particular body type.

FAMILY:
Birthday CakeBirthdays

June is a big birthday month in our family. We have 7 of them, along with 2 anniversaries, 3 graduations, and of course, Father's Day.

I love to name events, so a while back, it was my clever, (so I thought), idea to have one big party and call it "The Cargill Family June Round-Up".

My kids back then were less than enthusiastic about what they considered to be another one of Mom's "birdie" (i.e. dorky) ideas. One even said, "Oh, Mom, that's just about the dumbest thing I've ever heard of. If you call it that, we're not coming!"

Family CartoonBut I prevailed and now it's official - it's a family favorite on all of our calendars. Some of my favorite highlights of the Round-Up are:

1. Watching all the different age groups of the grandchildren hanging out with each other, as they build their own family bonds.

2. Bruce and I watching our grown-up children BEING the new grown-ups.

3. Lots of great food, lots of laughter, lots of smiles.

4. Listening to the same family stories and never getting tired of hearing them -- I realize it's our oral history and how vital this is to all of us.

5. My oldest son, Bruce, on guitar leading our sing-along as dusk comes while the little ones plead for just one more round of "Grandma's Feather Bed".
.

This fun gathering is one of my favorite summer delights. Life is rich at the Round-Up!
FUN:
Tank Tops
& Flip-Flops

Flip Flops

Summer is my favorite season. I love getting up early and being the first one outside. I love listening to the birds of morning, sitting on the quiet patio with a mug of tea and watching butterflies flit from flower to flower.

Celebrate summer in your way.

Honeysuckle Fill yourself up inwardly and drink in the sights, sounds, smells, tastes and feel of summer: honeysuckle and strawberries.

Wear fitted tank tops. Smile at the happy, satisfying snap of flip-flops. Walk barefoot around the house. Take pleasure in lightning bugs, thunderstorms, and sunsets that grow later and later.

Dining a la frescoInvite a good pal to lunch at an outdoor café and order something really, really delicious, sit and chat for a long time and give the waitress a very good tip.

I'd love it if you'd pass this newsletter along to a friend or two you think would enjoy it.
