Postville: A Clash of Cultures in Heartland America by Stephen Bloom In 1987, a group Lubavitchers, one of the most orthodox and zealous of the Jewish sects, opened a kosher slaughterhouse just outside tiny Postville, Iowa When the business became a worldwide success, Postville found itself both revived and divided. The quiet, restrained Iowans were astonished at these brash, assertive Hasidic Jews. The Lubavitchers, on the other hand, could not compromise with the world of Postville; their religion and their tradition quite literally forbade it. Award-winning journalist Stephen G. Bloom found himself with a bird's-eye view of this battle. What makes a community? How does one accept new and powerfully different traditions?

Staff Reviews, Recommendations and New Releases
Adult Fiction
From Elizabeth M.: Live by Night by Dennis Lehane This highly anticipated novel by one of our "native sons" does not disappoint. Live by Night follows Lehane's best seller, The Given Day, and features Joe Coughlin, son of Boston police captain Thomas Coughlin. Joe moves from his world of petty crime to the world of rum running, gangsters and corrupt policemen. Set in the mid 1920's, the story shifts from Boston and a Massachusetts prison to Tampa and Cuba. Even though Joe goes from being an outlaw to a gangster in the more violent underground of bootleggers and the corrupt rum trade, you often find yourself rooting for the bad guy! List Price: $27.99 Our Price: $22.39 (Limited number of SIGNED copies available!) From Elisa: Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn I am not naturally drawn to thriller novels, but all the hype about this book intrigued me. Never before have I "fallen down the rabbit hole" so quickly and deeply. This novel and the characters within were train wrecks that I could not stop watching! The story begins with Nick and his wife Amy's anniversary...the first one they are celebrating in the small town in Missouri. They've recently moved there from New York City where life was something right out of the ending of your favorite chic-lit book. As the character's are revealed (both narrate the story) and Amy disappears, you realize they are not living the perfect romance. Amy and Nick's story changed my psyche and affected my mood and interactions with friends and family while I read it. I could not wait to finish reading the book for two reasons: First, I had to know what happens. Secondly, I could not wait until I did not have Amy and Nick in my brain. List Price: $25.00 Our Price: $20.00
From Elizabeth M. Love Anthony by Lisa Genova Once again, expert storyteller and neuroscientist Lisa Genova writes compassionately about brain disorders as she presents a tale of a young child who has autism. At age three, Anthony is diagnosed as autistic and his parents continue their efforts to accept a situation which exhausts their patience and resources. When he is eight, Anthony dies as a result of a freak accident and his mother Olivia retreats to their cottage on Nantucket. Here she grieves and tries to put her life back together as she accepts the fact that in addition to losing her son, her marriage has fallen apart. She meets Beth Ellis, another young woman who is facing great sadness when she discovers that her husband is having an affair with a woman in his workplace. As Olivia and Beth work through their problems, they turn to photography and writing respectively and find solace in one another's friendship. List Price: $26.00 Our Price: $20.80 From Karen: The Secret Keeper by Kate Morton
Perhaps the best from one of my favorite authors. A sixteen yearl old girl hiding in a tree house in the English countryside witnesses a shockingly violent event involving her mother. Fifty years later, she is caring for her mother who is dying. Clues she obtains from her mother's delirious
ramblings and family momentos cause her to explore the truth of the long ago tragedy. The twist at the end will leave you breathless! List Price: $26.00 Our Price: $21.59
Casual Vacancy by J.K. RowlingWhen Barry Fairweather dies unexpectedly in his early 40s, the little town of Pagford is left in shock. Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war. Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils.... Pagford is not what it at first seems. And the empty seat left by Barry on the town's council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen. Who will triumph in an election fraught with passion, duplicity, and unexpected revelations? List Price: $35.00 Our Price: $28.00 Jane: The Woman Who Loved Tarzan by Robin MaxwellCambridge, England, 1905. Jane Porter is the only female student in Cambridge University's medical program. She is far more comfortable in a lab coat dissecting corpses than she is in a corset and gown sipping afternoon tea. Jane dreams of traveling the globe in search of fossils that will prove the evolutionary theories of her scientific hero, Charles Darwin. When dashing American explorer Ral Conrath invites Jane and her father to join an expedition deep into West Africa, she can hardly believe her luck. Jane quickly learns that the lush jungle is full of secrets--and so is Ral Conrath. When danger strikes, Jane finds her hero, the key to humanity's past, and an all-consuming love in one extraordinary man: Tarzan of the Apes. $14.99
Adult Non-Fiction
From Vicky: The Richest Woman in America: Hetty Green in the Gilded Age by Janet WallachHetty Green was a notoriously frugal woman born in New Bedford in 1834. She invested her money on Wall Street and by the time of her death in 1916 she had accumulated about $100 million dollars - $2.5 billion dollars today!! There are many outrageous stories about Hetty Green's extreme stinginess and tendancy to sue. Wallach, believing that at least some of the worst stories were born in the yellow journalism of the time and the biases against women in business, draws a more sympathetic picture of this woman, who invested brilliantly and gained wealth with every financial panic. A wonderful book for anyone interested in local history and finance. (Did you know that as a child Hetty attended school here in Sandwich?) $27.95 Remembering the Music, Forgetting the Words: Travels with Mom in the Land of Dementia by Kate WhouleyIn this pro found, life-changing, and laugh-out-loud funny memoir, Cape Cod author Kate Whouley takes us on her journey as an Alzheimer's caregiver for her mom. Kate brings us right into the laugh-or-you'll-cry experiences of this horrible disease. In her mother, we meet a strong-minded, accidental feminist with a weakness for unreliable men. And we meet a daughter who learned early to fend for herself. We encounter their shared passions: books, words, and music. As her mother falls into forgetting, Whouley remembers for her. And when the books are forgotten, and the words begin to fade, it is the music that matters most. Holding hands after a concert, with a shared joke between them, their relationship is healed--even in the face of a dreaded and deadly diagnosis. $16.00 Sermons in Stone: The Stone Walls of New England and New York by Susan Allport and Illustrated by David Howell What do we actually know about stone walls? About the people who built them, and why? Stone walls are not simply monuments to the skill of Yankee farmers. The historical record makes clear that many were built by slaves, Indians, indentured servants, and children. Sermons in Stone is the surprising and illuminating history of the walls, a story that begins in the Ice Age and that has been shaped by the fencing dilemmas of the nineteenth century, by conflicts between Native Americans and colonists over land use, by American waves of immigration and suburbanization. $16.95
The End of Your Life Book Club by Will Schwalbe This is the inspiring true story of a son and his mother, who start a "book club" that brings them together as her life comes to a close. Over the next two years, Will and Mary Anne carry on conversations that are both wide-ranging and deeply personal, prompted by an eclectic array of books and a shared passion for reading. Their list jumps from classic to popular, from poetry to mysteries, from fantastic to spiritual. The issues they discuss include questions of faith and courage as well as everyday topics such as expressing gratitude and learning to listen. Throughout, we are constantly reminded of the power of books to comfort us, astonish us, teach us, and tell us what we need to do with our lives and in the world. $25.00

Montessori: Letter Work by Bobby George and June George In Montessori classrooms, students learn to write before they learn to read, so the process is driven by their own words and thoughts before those of others. Letters are taught first as sounds (instead of names), and alphabet tiles encourage children to trace each letter with their fingers. This book honors that tradition by emulating the standard classroom material with textured, traceable letters and beautiful colors that evoke the elegant simplicity of the Montessori aesthetic. Ages: 2-4 $9.95
Montessori: Number Work by Bobby George, JR. and June George This book follows the Montessori method by introducing the numbers 1 to 10 first as quantities to count before showing them as numerals. Cumulative red and blue tabs based on the counting rods found in Montessori classrooms help readers conceptualize quantities. Groupings of beautifully stylized illustrations provide objects to count before readers encounter textured numerals to trace with their fingers. Ages 2-5 $9.95
