Adult Fiction

banyan From Elizabeth:  In the Shadow of the Banyan by Vaddey Ratner

This exquisitely written story is based on real life experiences of the author and her family, who were members of a minor royal family in Phnom Penh.  The novel is told through the eyes of a seven year girl, who ultimately survives the atrocities of starvation, loss of family members and forced labor.  Throughout these horrors, the author extols the power of storytelling and hope.   Ratner was 5 years old when she and her family were sent into the Cambodian countryside during the Khmer Rouge purge in the mid 1970's.  In 1981, she and her mother arrived as refugees in the United States.  In the Author's Note at the end of the book, Ratner writes that she wanted to honor the spirit of her father, to give voice to his memory and the memories of others who were silenced.  She has has done this with elegance and reverence. List price: $25.00.  Our price: $20.00

Keeper of Lost From Karen:  The Keeper of Lost Causes by Jussi Adler-Olsen
This is another great Scandinavian detective/thriller.  The author is a bestselling author in Denmark, Germany and Austria as well as a winner of the Glass Key Award.  Once I got over the awkwardness of the beginning of the book, I was totally into it.  The main character is a tormented police detective, disliked by nearly the entire department.  He is assigned to head a new department within the Police called "Department Q", which was basically formed to funnel money from the government for the police to use at their discretion.  The detective's assistant is an insanely gifted Syrian man with a mysterious past.  He is supposed to clean and make coffee, but is soon insinuating himself into the cold cases that the detective (who'd rather play solitaire and chain smoke) is supposed to be investigating.   I thoroughly enjoyed this thriller!  $16.00 paperback

Casual Vacancy Casual Vacancy by J.K. Rowling
The totally incredible author of the Harry Potter books has written a novel for adults!  Are we excited?  Yes!   Pre-order your copy now!
The story is about a small English town called Pagford, which is left in shock when a member of the parish council suddenly dies.  Pagford is, seemingly, a very peaceful, idyllic town with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty facade is a town at war.  The rich are at war with the poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils...Pagford is not what it first seems.  And the empty seat left by Barry on the parish council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen. Who will triumph in an election fraught with passion, duplicity, and unexpected revelations?  The Casual Vacancy is the work of a storyteller like no other.  List price: $35.00. Our price: $28.00 (Available September 27)

on a farther shore On a Farther Shore: The Life and Legacy of Rachel Carson by William Souder
Rach
el Carson loved the ocean and wrote three books about its mysteries, but it was with Silent Spring, published 50 years ago, that this unassuming biologist awakened the world to the heedless chemical contamination of the environment.  Her work eventually led to the establishment of the EPA and to the banning of DDT and a host of related pesticides. DDT, whose inventor had won a Nobel Prize for its discovery, at first it appeared safe, but alarming reports surfaced of harm to fish, birds, and other wildlife.  The book shocked the public and forced the government to take action-despite a withering attack on Carson from the chemicals industry. By drawing frightening parallels between dangerous chemicals and the then-pervasive fallout from nuclear testing, Carson opened a fault line between the gentle ideal of conservation and the more urgent new concept of environmentalism.  Elegantly written and meticulously researched,  this extraordinary new biography captures the essence of one of the great reformers of the twentieth century.  $30.00 (Available September 4)

autumnal October, or Autumnal Tints by Henry David Thoreau
This is an ode to autumn as a season of ripeness, fullness, and maturity. Written shortly before Thoreau's death, it is perhaps the best piece ever written on the subject of the fall color of the changing leaves.  The images are brought to life brilliantly with the delicate and beautiful watercolors of Lincoln Perry.  Readers will feel as if they were walking alongside one of our best observers of the natural world.  The book includes a biographical essay by acclaimed scholar Robert D. Richardson, who delves into the events and relationships that influenced Thoreau's philosophy.  $17.95
