1. Waldo is hiding in local businesses listed below. Go find him!

2.  When you spot him, collect a card from that business.

3.  When you have cards from at least 8 different locations, bring them to Titcomb's Bookshop to claim a Waldo button (for the first 100 Waldo spotters)

Tuesday, July 24th 4-5pm

Jack 1939 Book Talk and Signing with Francine Mathews,  Author of

Jack 1939

Wednesday, July 25th 3-4pm

Author Francine Mathews saw a photo of Jack Kennedy in Paris in 1939.  From that photo came the idea for this gripping espionage thriller that explores what might have happened had a young Jack Kennedy been sent as a spy for Roosevelt in Europe as the world careened toward war. In the novel, the stakes are frighteningly high, the women Jack meets are devastatingly attractive, and the mix of fact and fiction is both surprising and engaging (especially some of the revelations about what it was really like to be a Kennedy child!)  Jack 1939 is a terrifically entertaining story which combines actual history with captivating storytelling.

Francine Mathews is the author of twenty novels of mystery, history, and suspense. A graduate of Princeton and Stanford, she spent four years as an intelligence analyst at the CIA, and presently lives and works in Colorado. Our Price:  $21.56 (Reg Price:  $26.95)

Adult Fiction:

Tigers in Red Weather From Karen:  Tigers in Red Weather by Liza Klaussmann

This is a remarkable first novel by the great-great-great granddaughter of Herman Melville (writing must be in the genes!). She also is a noted writer for the New York Times.  The novel takes place mainly around the family estate on Martha's Vineyard known as Tiger House. Nick and her cousin Helena have grown up here, through many summers, and in the years following World War II their lives have taken divergent paths. Helena heads off to Hollywood to a husband Nick is wary of. Nick reunites with her husband who is attempting to adjust to life after military duty. The cousins come back to Tiger House as their lives are brought together and torn apart by family secrets and a local murder.  Wonderfully written, you can smell the salt air drifting over blue hydrangeas and hear the sound of pounding surf. Dramatic and engrossing! Available July 17th - Our Price:  $20.79 (Reg. Price:  $25.99)

seating arrangement From Elizabeth M.:  Seating Arrangements by Maggie Shipstead  In this outstanding debut novel we spend a long weekend on an island off the coast of Cape Cod with the Van Meter family and their friends as they prepare for a wedding.  It is a social satire full of laugh out loud moments and poignant family interaction.  I think you will agree that Shipstead is a master of character development as you meet the patriarch, Winn Van Meter, who in turn lusts after membership in an exclusive golf club and one of the bridesmaids; his long suffering wife, Biddy, who manages to see the "good" in this man; the bride, Daphne, who happens to be well advanced in her pregnancy; and her sister, Livia, who is on the rebound of a relationship and is eager to be in another one.  As you finish the last page, you will hope that the author is hard at work on her next story.  Our Price:  $20.76 (Reg. Price:  $25.95)

capital Staff Pick:  Capital by John Lanchester
Celebrated novelist John Lanchester (an elegant and wonderfully witty writer from the New York Times) returns with an epic novel that captures the obsessions of our time. It's 2008 and things are falling apart: Bear Stearns and Lehman Brothers are going under, and the residents of Pepys Road, London (a banker and his shopaholic wife, an old woman dying of a brain tumor and her graffiti-artist grandson, Pakistani shop owners and a shadowy refugee who works as the meter maid, the young soccer star from Senegal and his minder) are receiving anonymous postcards reading "We Want What You Have." Who is behind it? What do they want? Epic in scope yet intimate, capturing the ordinary dramas of very different lives, this is a novel of love and suspicion, of financial collapse and terrorist threat, of property values going up and fortunes going down, and of a city at a moment of extraordinary tension.  Our price:  $21.56 (Reg. price:  $26.95)

gold From Karen:  Gold by Chris Cleave
A story rife with elegance, humor, and passion about friendship, marriage, parenthood, tragedy, and redemption. Gold is the story of Zoe and Kate, world-class athletes who have been friends and rivals since their first day of training. They've loved, fought, betrayed, forgiven, consoled, gloried, and grown up together. Now on the eve of London 2012, their last Olympics, both women will be tested to their physical and emotional limits. They must confront each other and their own mortality to decide, when lives are at stake: What would you sacrifice for the people you love, if it meant giving up the thing that was most important to you in the world?  (Chris Cleave is the author of the bestselling book, Little Bee.)  Our price:  $21.60 (Reg. price:  $27.00)

long time, no see Staff Pick:  Long Time, No See by  Dermot Healy
Celebrated Irish author Dermot Healy's first novel in more than ten years is a rich, beguiling, compassionate, and wonderfully funny story about community, family, love, and bonds across generations.  Set in an isolated coastal town in northwest Ireland, Long Time, No See centers around an unforgettable cast of innocents and wounded, broken misfits. The story is narrated by a young man known as Mister Psyche who takes up with and is then drawn into a series of bemusing and unsettling misadventures with two men some fifty years his senior--his grand uncle Joejoe and Joejoe's neighbor The Blackbird--wonderful, eccentric characters full of ancient jealousies and grudges and holding some very dark secrets.  Our Price:  $22.36 (List Price:  $27.95)

silver sparrow From Elizabeth S.:  Silver Sparrow by Tayari Jones
With the opening line, "My father, James Witherspoon,is a bigamist," author Tayari Jones unveils a breathtaking story about a man's deception, a family's complicity, and the two teenage girls caught in the middle.  Set in a middle-class neighborhood in Atlanta in the 1980s, the novel revolves around James Witherspoon's two families--the public one and the secret one. When the daughters from each family meet and form a friendship, only one of them knows they are sisters. It is a relationship destined to explode.  Tayari's story telling draws you in and keeps you until the end.  This is a fabulous coming of age story - compelling and sharp and humorous.  $13.95

invisible women From Elizabeth S.:  Calling Invisible Women by Jeannie Ray
This is another one of Jeannie Ray's humorous looks at family and motherhood.   She throws a little romance in and it makes a great summer read.
A mom in her early fifties, Clover knows she no longer turns heads the way she used to, and she's only really missed when dinner isn't on the table on time. Then Clover wakes up one morning to discover she's invisible--truly invisible. She panics, but when her husband and son sit down to dinner, nothing seems amiss. Even though she's been with her husband, Arthur, since college, her invisibility goes unnoticed. Her friend Gilda immediately observes that Clover is invisible, which relieves Clover immensely--she's not losing her mind after all!--but she is crushed by the realization that neither her husband nor her children ever truly look at her. She was invisible even before she knew she was invisible.  Nothing makes a better beach ready than fun and humorous book! Our Price:  $19.20  (Reg. Price:  $24.00)

orphanmaster Staff Pick:  The Orphanmaster by Jean Zimmerman
From a debut novelist, a gripping historical thriller and rousing love story set in seventeenth-century Manhattan.  It's 1663 in the tiny, hardscrabble Dutch colony of New Amsterdam, now present-day southern Manhattan. Orphan children are going missing, and among those looking into the mysterious state of affairs are a quick-witted twenty-two-year-old trader, Blandine von Couvering, herself an orphan, and a dashing British spy named Edward Drummond.  Suspects abound, including the governor's wealthy nephew, a green-eyed aristocrat with decadent tastes; an Algonquin trapper who may be possessed by a demon that turns people into cannibals; and the colony's own corrupt and conflicted orphan  master.  Jean Zimmerman brings New Amsterdam and its surrounding wilderness alive for modern-day readers with exacting period detail. Lively, fast paced, and full of colorful characters, The Orphanmaster is a dramatic page-turner that will appeal to fans of Hilary Mantel and Geraldine Brooks.  Our Price:  $22.36  (Our Price:  $27.95)

black diamond Staff Pick:  Black Diamond by Martin Walker
Something dangerous is afoot in St. Denis; in the space of a few weeks, the normally sleepy village sees attacks on Vietnamese vendors, arson at a local Asian restaurant, and subpar truffles from China smuggled into outgoing shipments at a nearby market. All of it threatens the Dordogne's truffle trade, worth millions of dollars each year, and all of it spells trouble for Benoit "Bruno" Courreges, master chef, devoted oenophile, and beloved chief of police. When one of his hunting partners, a noted truffle expert, is murdered, Bruno's investigation into the murky events unfolding around St. Denis becomes infinitely more complicated. Because his friend wasn't just a connoisseur of French delicacies, he was a former high-profile intelligence agent--and someone wanted him dead. $14.95

The other passengers, Penny's boyfriend Jake and their friend Demeter, each have secrets, and everyone is touched by the tragedy, in fact, practically everyone on the island feels some responsibility for the accident. Each character's guilt rubs them raw with worry. The sparks that this story throws out becomes a current that circles the agitated kids and their parents, electrifying the atmosphere as they grapple with what happened. Hilderbrand has a gift for building tension, and the reader will be willing to do just about anything to discover the real reason why Penny would drive herself, her brother, and her boyfriend over an embankment into oblivion.  Our Price:  $21.59  (List Price:  $26.99)

Adult Non-Fiction
fresh and green From Elisa:  The Fresh & Green Table by Susie Middleton
There is a trend of "going" vegetarian for a couple of days out of the week in response to being kinder to our environment and our bodies.  The Fresh & Green Table makes this even more appealing.  Following up the popular Fast, Fresh & Green, author Susie Middleton writes that "This book isn't about replacing meat. It's about making vegetables sing." Offering 75 mouth-watering recipes, 50 full-color photographs and innovative ideas, this book will become your go-to for fresh, flavorful fare that's unique and crowd-pleasing. My favorite dishes include summer-on-a-pizza and roasted ratatouille tart.  This book truly does make veggies the star of the show and perusing the recipes makes you crave asparagus, brussel sprouts and cauliflower!  $24.95

island practice From Elizabeth M.:  Island Practice: Cobblestone Rash, Underground Tom, and Other Adventures of a Nantucket Doctor by Pam Belluck
Dr. Timothy Lepore is a surgeon on Nantucket.  He is also a medical examiner, the football team doctor, a tick and Lyme disease expert, a husband and father, a community activist, a collector of guns (and occasionally roadkill) who enjoys knitting dog-hair sweaters!  This true story gives credence to the adage truth is stranger than fiction.  On this island of people of great wealth and people well below the poverty line, Dr. Tim treats all of his patients with compassion.  He is known as a master diagnostician who plays by his own rules. Often abrupt and outspoken, he is loved and trusted by his patients who know he is there for them 24/7. $25.99

overdressed From Eliza:  Overdressed:  The Shockingly High Cost of Cheap Fashion by Elizabeth Cline
Overdressed: The Shockingly High Cost of Cheap Fashion takes a look at American consumer culture and the rise of store such as TJ Maxx, Forever 21, H&M, and Target. This book is fascinating not only because it examines the concept of cheap fashion that many of us have come to take for granted in a bargain hunting obsessed age, but also because the author Elizabeth Cline is a self-professed recovering shopaholic. Cline is sympathetic to the average person's desire to accumulate $10 dresses and $15 dollar shoes even as she unearths the unsavory side of the fashion industry. This book is highly recommended for anyone who has ever wondered what the impact of the cheap clothes industry is on our economic well-being, our society, or our environment.  $25.95

tolstoy Staff Pick:  Tolstoy and the Purple Chair: My Year of Magical Reading by Nina Sankovitch

Nina Sankovitch has always been a reader. As a child, she discovered that a trip to the local bookmobile with her sisters was more exhilarating than a ride at the carnival. Books were the glue that held her immigrant family together. When Nina's eldest sister died at the age of forty-six, Nina turned to books for comfort, escape, and introspection. In her beloved purple chair, she rediscovered the magic of such writers as Toni Morrison, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Ian McEwan, Edith Wharton, and, of course, Leo Tolstoy. Through the connections Nina made with books and authors (and even other readers), her life changed profoundly, and in unexpected ways. $14.99
