And A Happy New Year!!!

The holidays are a beautiful time, but now that they are over I'm breathing a sigh of relief.  It seems each year from October to New Year's Day we are all sprinting a marathon.  Social, school, work and family events fill our calenders and once January 1st arrives we all collapse in a happy state of exhaustion.

So, you might ask, now what?  Well, I look forward to experiencing a state of pure nirvana when I have time to pull out all my new cookbooks and find new recipes to try or curl up with my favorite new novel knowing I have nothing else on my to do list.  I look at January as a time to be just a little selfish, but in a good way.  Making New Year's resolutions, selecting healthy items to eat, organizing closets, selecting a knitting project and spending much needed quiet time with the family are some of the wonderful things I plan to accomplish in January.

To help you find your state of nirvana we've collected a wonderful group of new books to help inspire you in the new year.  We want to thank you all for a fantastic 2011 and look forward to seeing you in 2012.  As usual Titcomb's Bookshop is planning many amazing events with author signings, a new book club featuring food, and fun children's events.

Happy New Year!!!

Mountains Beyond Mountains by Tracy Kidder
At the center of Mountains Beyond Mountains stands Paul Farmer. Doctor, Harvard professor, renowned infectious-disease specialist, anthropologist, the recipient of a MacArthur "genius" grant, world-class Robin Hood, Farmer was brought up in a bus and on a boat, and in medical school found his life's calling: to diagnose and cure infectious diseases and to bring the lifesaving tools of modern medicine to those who need them most. This magnificent book shows how radical change can be fostered in situations that seem insurmountable, and it also shows how a meaningful life can be created.

Shot through with the smells and sights of Scilla, Italy, and New York's burgeoning Little Italy, this intoxicating story follows Giovanna as she finds companionship, celebrates the birth of a baby girl, takes pride in a growing business, and feels a sense of belonging on a family outing to Coney Island.  Laurie Fabiano will join us by phone for a discussion of the book.

About The Hundred-Foot Journey:  After the boisterous Haji family move from India to the French Alps in the 1940s, they open an inexpensive Indian restaurant opposite an esteemed French restaurant and infuse the sleepy town with the spices of India, transforming the lives of its eccentric villagers. A French chef wages culinary war with the immigrant family, but finally agrees to mentor young Hassan Haji, leading him to Paris, the launch of his own restaurant, and a slew of new adventures.  The Hundred-Foot Journey is about how the hundred-foot distance between a new Indian kitchen and a traditional French one can represent the gulf between different cultures and desires. This is a fable for the ages-charming, endearing, and compulsively readable.

Staff Picks

and so it goesFrom Karen: And So It Goes, Kurt Vonnegut: A Life Charles J. Shields List Price:  $30.00  Our Price:  $24.00
Mr. Shields (Mockingbird) has left no stone unturned in researching this authorized biography of one of the most enigmatic of authors in American literary history. He met and interviewed Vonnegut just prior to his death in 2007, and pulled from massive amounts of published and unpublished letters, papers and interviews with those who knew Kurt Vonnegut as well as anyone could know this inexplicable man. A fascinating, in-depth review of the life of a man who was lionized as well as reviled by the public. His most famous work, Slaughterhouse-Fivde, was a mostly autobiographical retelling of the horrors of surviving the fire-bombing of Dresden, Germany, where he was a POW during WWII. This event continued to haunt him and to color his pessimistic attitude toward life. An important work in the annals of contemporary literary biography.

the obitsFrom Elizabeth:  The New York Times The Obits Annual 2012 William McDonald, editor  $13.95
There is a famous quotation often attributed to Mark Twain but  actually uttered by Clarence Darrow, "I've never wished a man dead, but I have read some obituaries with great

pleasure."  I start most of my days  reading the obituaries in the New York Times.  If you have not had this pleasure, you can catch up on the highlights in this 2012 annual, which includes obituaries from August, 2010 to July, 2011.  According to the foreword by Pete Hamill, the obituary editor William McDonald chose people from all over the world and all walks of life whose accomplishments have mattered to others.  To begin with, you might want to flip through the book to read about a person who is familiar to you, but I guarantee you will soon want to start at the beginning and read through to the end!

the doctor and the divaFrom Rita:  The Doctor and the Diva  by Adrienne McDonnell  $15.00  This novel begins in Boston in 1903, moves to Trinidad and then Florence, Italy and, much to my surprise, we even visit Cape Cod.  This is a story of a young couple

struggling to have children.  The husband is a prominent Boston businessman and his wife is an aspiring opera singer.   They seek the help of an obstetric doctor, but the wife, Erika, realizing she probably cannot have children, secretly make plans to move to Florence to pursue her singing career.  The author portrays a wife, mother and lover who wants it all and pursues her dream in an era when most women would not dare do so. After reading this book I have the desire to go to the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, walk the streets of Boston for a day - and of course a trip to Florence would be nice. This desire comes from the beautiful and memorable way in the which the author describes these places.

behind the smile
From Elizabeth: Behind the Smile: Orphaned by Hitler's Madness by Peter R.K. Brenner $19.99
As you turn the pages of this memoir, you are reminded over and over again of the adage, truth is stranger than fiction. Peter Brenner was born in 1944 in Germany to a unwed, seventeen year old Norwegian girl. She was unaware of the fact that she had become a part of Heinrich Himmler's plan, the Lebensborn Program, designed to create the perfect Aryan race. In the first five years of his life, Peter was in three orphanages. He was adopted at the age of five and came to America to live with his new family. The experiences he endured in those formative years never left him. With the encouragement and support of his family, Peter decided to search for his birth mother and learn more about his early life. He records one amazing story after another as doors and windows open to him in this endeavor. The reader will be fascinated with the first hand accounts of a part of history we have only heard about in passing.

Staff Picks

the house at tyneford
From Elizabeth: The House of Tyneford by Natasha Solomons  $15.00  In the spring of 1938, the Landau family of Vienna began to make plans to escape the growing concerns of life under the terror of Hitler.  Nineteen year old Elise goes to southern England to work as a parlor maid in a large manor house leaving behind an upper class life with her mother who was an opera singer and her father who was a novelist.  The son of the master of Tyneford returns home from Cambridge and in time a friendship between Elise and Kit develops into a more serious relationship.  This is a love story set amidst the aristocracy of an old manor house and the changes that came about after the war.  The author has taken bits and pieces of her own family's story and spun a tale that will transport you across the pond to war torn England.  Fans of Kate Morton will welcome a new voice for Anglophiles.

Little Princes

From Vicky: Little Princes by Conor Grennan $14.99

Little Princes is an inspiring, heartwarming, honest and often funny story about the author's work at an orphanage in Nepal. What began as a three month stint volunteering to impress friends, particularly girls, turned into a life-changing experience for both Conor and the children. Most of these children, he discovered, were not orphans at all. They had been sent at great cost by their parents to safety from the civil war raging about them, but were taken instead by child traffickers who had abandoned them or sold them into slavery. Conor's efforts to reunite the children with their families proved to be dangerous, much more complicated than he could ever imagine and utterly riveting.

HabibiFrom Vicky:  Habibi by Craig Thompson List Price:  $35.00  Our Price:  $28.00  I'm not ordinarily a graphic novel reader.  In general, I think of them as too edgy or too violent for my taste.  However, my son introduced me to Craig Thompson's graphic novel Blankets, and I am now a huge fan of his work.  Blankets tells the moving story of Thompson's childhood in an Evangelical Christian family, his first love, and his early adulthood.    Now, eight years after Blankets, Thompson has revealed a masterpiece in his new book, Habibi, the story of two orphans, Dodola and Zam, who escape the Arab slave trade and use their wiles to survive for years until Dodola is kidnapped into a harem.  This is a sweeping epic and love story, inspired by Islamic history and religion, and perfectly brought to life with Thompson's amazing artwork.  Not only is this a beautiful book inside, it's also gorgeous outside! It  looks like a beautiful leatherbound book and features bright gilt decoration and Arabic calligraphy.  This is an adult book with adult themes.

From Elisa:  Bossypants by Tina Fey $15.99  At last, Tina Fey's story can be told. Her honesty will have you rolling in laughter, so make sure you have a book-mark handy to save your place.  Her story rang true for me in so many ways.  I think we all have felt like the square peg trying to fit in the round hole at least once in our life.  I would make sure most teenage girls (and their moms) read this because, if they handle themselves half as well as Tina has, you know they will have survive and thrive!

From Elizabeth:  Sweet Shawlettes by Jean Moss $21.95  Shawlettes are the new socks! These hugely popular, fashion accessories are worn about the shoulders and meant for showing off. They're not only stylish but these budget-friendly pieces make for perfect portable projects. Shawlettes can be endlessly reinterpreted in beautiful ways as this book shows. It's one that will capture knitters' imaginations for years to come.

trader joe's skinnyFrom Elisa:  Cooking with Trader Joe's:  Skinny by Jennifer K. Reilly  List Price:  $24.95  Our Price:  $19.96   Famed dietitian and nutrition blogger Jennifer Reilly (BitchinDietitian.com) is here to set readers free with easy-to-follow weight control tips and mouth-watering Trader Joe's-inspired recipes.  What I really loved about this book is how easy and flavorfull these dishes are. There are many vegan recipes too!  Each recipe has a picture, which is awesome when experimenting with new recipes. The flavors in the book are light, bright and inspire you to try new grains and legumes.

dash and lily's book of daresFrom Edye:  Dash & Lily's Book of Dares by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan  $8.99 Now available in paperback is the clever teen read, Dash & Lily's Book of Dares by the bestselling writing team of Rachel Cohn and David Levithan, authors of Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist.  The book begins with Dash's discovery of a journal marked on the cover, "DO YOU DARE?" on a shelf at her favorite bookstore.  Of course Dash dares, so he opens it to the first entry:  "I've left some clues for you.  If you want them, turn the page.  If you don't, put the book back on the shelf, please."  What follows is a smart written repartee between two New York teens, both longing to trade dares, humor and dreams.   Can their in-person selves possibly connect as well as their notebook versions?

Me...Jane From Elisa:  Me...Jane by Patrick McDonnell $15.99

The New York Times-bestselling author of The Gift of Nothing presents an inspiring story of the young Jane Goodall and her special childhood toy chimpanzee. "Jane had a chimpanzee named Jubilee," is how this beautiful book begins.  Me . . . Jane ends with an illustration of Goodall falling asleep next to Jubilee "to awake one day . . . to her dream come true." A moving photograph shows the adult Goodall reaching out to a baby chimpanzee, which is reaching back to her. The book closes with a page about the naturalist's life and work, and a heartfelt message from Goodall herself.  I just love the message this book teaches children and adults...your dreams can come true.
