shift your shopping
Dear Friends,

Let's build an annual tradition that strengthens local economies, expands employment, nurtures a sense of community, and provides a more relaxed, fun, and rewarding gift-buying experience.

As customers, we are about to collectively spend a large portion of our annual shopping budget between Nov. 1 and Dec. 31. If you join us in shifting those dollars to locally owned, independent businesses we'll all generate 2-3 times as much economic activity in our community than if we had spent our money at a national chain. Across North America, that could mean billions of dollars of economic impact.  To find out more click on the Shift Your Shopping Logo above!

Paradise WalkBook Talk and Signing with Mary Malloy, author of Paradise Walk

Saturday, November 12th 2-3pm

In this novel, Mary Malloy brings her signature wit and style-not to mention thorough research-to the second book in the Lizzie Manning Mystery Series.  Deftly weaving together the legends of King Arthur, Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, and the relics of St. Thomas Becket, Malloy provides a mystery as sizzling as Lizzie Manning's first adventure, The Wandering Heart. Paradise Walk cleverly blurs the line between fiction and history.  Mary Malloy is the author of four maritime history books, including the award-winning Devil on the Deep Blue Sea: The Notorious Career of Samuel Hill of Boston.  Our Price:  $15.95

WingshootersBook Club Tuesday November 15th 7pm

Wingshooters by Nina Revoyr

We are honored to have Nina Revoyr call during the meeting to discuss this story of family and the dangers of complacency in the face of questionable justice.  In the tradition of To Kill a Mockingbird, A River Runs Through It, and Snow Falling on Cedars, Nina Revoyr's new novel examines the effects of change on a small, isolated town, the strengths and limits of community, and the sometimes conflicting loyalties of family and justice. Set in the expansive countryside of central Wisconsin, against the backdrop of Vietnam and the post-Civil Rights era, Wingshooters explores both connection and loss as well as the complex but enduring bonds of family.   List Price:  $15.95  Our Price:  $12.76

STAFF RECOMMENDATIONS

From Elizabeth:  The Art of Fielding, A Novel by Chad Harbach
This book has been the well deserved recipient of many rave reviews since its publication. It was high on my "to read" list and I moved it to the top recently when a customer told me I must read it now! I was not disappointed. It is the coming of age story of Henry Skrimshander, a young baseball star. As a student at a small midwestern college it appears that he is destined to play in the major leagues until a routine throw goes awry. The lives of the five main characters are turned upside down and the reader is caught up in the relationships among families, friends and lovers, and the forces that complicate them. Set against a background of baseball, the author's lyrical prose makes reference to Melville, Moby Dick (the baseball team is the Harpooners), Homer and T.S. Eliot.  List Price: $25.99 Our Price: $ 20.79 ebook: $12.99

Following AtticusFrom Edye: Following Atticus by Tom Ryan
Sometimes we all need to read a really good book that is gentle, uplifting, and simply a darn good story. When I am in such a mood, I often find that a book about dogs can be a good bet. Well, such a mood recently hit, and I was delighted to satisfy it with Tom Ryan's new book, Following Atticus. This chronicles a middle-aged writer's trek across all forty-eight of New Hampshire's highest peaks with his devoted companion, Atticus M. Finch. The bond between man, dog and nature builds and holds to a remarkable ending, even when the man is a "tough as nails" newspaper writer, and the dog is as small as a miniature schnauzer. A great read.  List Price:  $24.99  Our Price:  19.99 $  ebook:  $12.99

The Dovekeeper's
From Karen:  The Dovekeepers by Alice Hoffman
Alice Hoffman has written an extraordinary novel of the ancient world. Driven out of Jerusalem by the Romans, a band of Jewish refugees sets out to start over in a place where they can feel safe and practice their religion in peace. Yael, red-haired and freckled, is shunned by her assassin father for causing her mother to die in childbirth, but she has the heart of a lion. Aziza is a warrior's daughter, raised as a boy in warrior's ways, until her father is finally blessed by a true son. She never forgets her life as a warrior. Shirah has lived as a mystic and wise woman, forever treading the thin line between magic and witchcraft.  These woman are all brought together in Masada, King Herod's seemingly impenetrable fortress kingdom, where they work as dovekeepers, fall in love, and fight to defend themselves and their community.  A beautifully crafted novel unlike any of the author's previous works.  List Price: $27.99 Our Price: $22.39     ebooks:  $12.99

The Cat's TableFrom Vicky:  The Cat's Table by Michael Ondaatje. Michael Ondaatje, author of The English Patient, is an utterly brilliant writer and I feel at a loss to describe how wonderful this book is!!! On the surface, it is the story of an 11 year old boy's voyage alone from Ceylon to England. As the boat moves slowly and steadily along, the boy makes friends, explores the boundaries of the ship, observes and becomes acquainted with fellow passengers and begins to come of age. The book is driven not only by story, but also by its quiet mood and pace. Not to be missed! $26.00; our price $20.80. (We are delighted to have a limited number of signed copies available!)  ebook:  $12.99

Buddha in the attic
From Vicky:  Buddha in the Attic by Julie Otsuka - This is an exquisitely written, poignant and fascinating story of a group of "picture brides" who left Japan for husbands in San Francisco around the 1920s. Written in the first person plural ("we," "some of us," "several of us"), it tells of the nervousness of young girls meeting their husbands in a strange land; the varying abilities to adapt to their new lives, some living comfortably, others in abject poverty and with cruel husbands; the birth and growth of children and the inevitable difficulties between these two generations; the coming of World War II and the internment camps. The author conveys her story and the emotional lives of her characters in writing that is sparse and poetic, completely real and so very powerful!
List Price: $22.00 Our Price: $  17.60 ebook:  $9.99

Essential pepinFrom Elisa:  Essential Pepin by Jacques Pepin

Having grown up watching Jacques Pepin's shows religiously PBS, I've always enjoyed his style of cooking.  His style of cooking makes a recipe simple without being dumbed down or dull.   In his new book, Essential Pepin, Pepin culls his favorite dishes from six decades in the kitchen. The book also includes a DVD of cooking tutorials.  With a grocery list in hand, I'm ready to tackle his butternut squash gratin, little corn fritters, and tomato chowder with mollet eggs and croutons.  His recipes use many pantry staples we already have and techniques most home cooks could easily master. List Price:  $40.00  Our Price:  $32.00

My Father's Daughter

From Elisa:  My Father's Daughter:  Delicious, Easy Recipes Celebrating Family & Togetherness by Gweneth Paltrow

I'll admit it, I did not want to like this cookbook.  I mean the woman has an Oscar for goodness sake!  But alas, I really like it.  Who knew Gwyneth ate fried food and dessert???  Not only does she eat it, she knows how to cook it.  Oysters po-boy, fish tacos, best stir-fried chicken and wonderful homemade salad dressing recipes make your mouth water as you flip the pages.  The food in the photographs is as beautiful as she is.  So, while we have yet another reason to be a little jealous, mostly I'm impressed and can't wait to cook!!!  List Price:  $30.00  Our Price:  $24.00

genius of place

From Vicky:  Genius of Place:  The Life of Frederick Law Olmsted:  Abolitionist, Conservationist, and Designer of Central Park.
by Justin Martin

Frederick Law Olmsted is one of our most influential and prolific landscape architects. Most famous for his design of Central Park in New York, his work includes the Emerald Necklace in Boston, the grounds of the US Capitol building and the midway at the Columbian Exhibition in Chicago.  His vision for America included a landscape featuring equality and concern for the environment. Highly readable, well researched and fascinating study. List Price:  $30.00   Our Price:  $24.00  ebook:  $9.62

From Elizabeth:  Over and Under the Snow by Kate Messner

This jewel of a picturebook is perfect for sharing on a New England winter day. A little girl goes cross country skiing with her father. By looking and listening carefully they discover a secret world of animals living above and under the snow. The reader watches a red squirrel disappear under the snow and in turn learns about other members of the animal kingdom in their underground homes-- such as tiny shrews, deer mice, voles and beavers. On the surface the skiers follow the tracks of deer and a red fox. An interesting author's note and glossary of animals in the book give more detailed information for an older reader.  Our Price:  $16.99

for the birds

From Vicky:  For the Birds: The Life of Roger Tory Peterson by Peggy Thomas and Illustrated by Laura Jacques.

This is a gorgeous picture book biography of the man who grew up to be one of the world's leading advocates for and experts on birds. There are lots of interesting facts and stories. A nature lover from the start, Roger was given special permission as a child by the chief of police to stay out after the town's curfew to collect moths. This is a great book for ages 6-9 and would make a wonderful classroom gift! Our Price:  $16.95

how do you feedFrom Edye:  How Do You Feed a Hungry Giant? by Caitlin Friedman, Illustrated by Shaw Nielsen.

How do you know when a kid's picture book is a really good kid's book? You try it out in a storytime...And at Titcomb's recent storytime, kids aged 2-10 loved How Do You Feed a Hungry Giant?: A Munch and Sip Pop-Up Book. They laughed at the concept of satisfying a giant's enormous appetite. They giggled through all the requisite eating noises...CHOMP! GULP! SLURP! MUNCH! And they smiled at the giant hearts of the family that tackled this giant problem.  Our Price:  $18.95

secrets at the sea

From Vicky:  Secrets at Sea by Richard Peck
This is one of my new absolute favorite new children's books!! Written by Newbery Award winning author Richard Peck, it's one of those wonderful, classic old fashioned adventure stories full of heart, beautifully written and filled with humor, too. It is the story of three mouse sisters who sail to Europe at the turn of the century with their human family, which is on a quest to find a husband for their daughter, Olive. Highly recommended, especially for girls ages 8 and up. It would make an excellent read-aloud, too! (We have a limited number of signed copies available.) Our Price:  $16.99 ebook:  $10.99
