STAFF RECOMMENDATIONS
From Karen: A Secret Gift: How One Man's Kindness and a Trove of Letters Revealed The Hidden History of the Great Depression by Ted Gup ($25.95, sale price $20.76)). This wonderful book combines a bit of real life sleuthing with the revelation that during hard economic times, one person CAN make a difference in many lives without expecting any recognition. A true 'It's A Wonderful Life' story...inspiring!
From Karen: Russian Winter by Daphne Kolotay ($25.99, sale price $20.79) This is a passionate and elegantly written novel about a former ballerina star of the Bolshoi who decides to auction her gorgeous jewelry collection. While sorting through her collection, she is reminded of the heartbreaking episodes of her life 50 years ago. This novel weaves history and Russia and the present in New England along with family secrets and visually arresting writing. Recommended!
From Kathleen:What Good Is God? In Search of A Faith That Matters by Philip Yancey ($23.99, sale price $19.19) Author Philip Yancey's newest book covers familiar themes such as grace, tolerance or forgiveness in the face of tragedy. His essays are actual speeches he gave for different audiences. What is wonderful about these speeches is that he provides his personal back story as to where the invitation came from and what he was doing at that time or how he was personally affected by the events. And even better, this book may be read in its entirety or just chapter by chapter here and there.
From Ralph (yup...that would be Ralph Titcomb. Not a typo. This is the first review he has EVER submitted so you know that this book had to have a significant impact on him!) At Home: A Short History of Private Life by Bill Bryson ($28.95, sale price $23.16 ) At Home is an amazing history of private life over the last several hundred years. The chapter on the history of the kitchen alone is worth the price of the book. This fascinating book is so well researched that the bibliography takes up 26 pages! If you like Bryson, you'll love this one. (By the way, we have a limited number of signed copies available for sale.)
From Vicky: Barefoot Contessa: How Easy Is That? by Ina Garten ($35.00, sale price $28.00) I could not wait to get my hands on Ina Garten's new cookbook, and it's wonderful!! I love her simple approach to cooking and her cookbooks are my favorites! The simple and utterly delicious recipes make this a perfect choice to create a easy and delicious meal for everyday or company. A few recipes I'm going to try: Baked Fontina, Roasted Vegetable Frittata, Middle Eastern Vegetable Salad, Easy Cranberry & Apple Cake and Chocolate Pudding Cream Tart!! Yum!!
From Vicky: Six Novels in Woodcuts by Lynd Ward ($70.00 sale price $56.00) Lynd Ward is a brilliant and powerful artist. For years we have bought and sold his scarce novels for adults printed around the 1930s entirely in woodcuts - there is not one single word in the books! Lynd Ward is a brilliant and powerful artist. They are beautiful and I love the format of this two volume hardcover set in slipcase, which includes all 6 books in 1408 pages. The books are edited by Art Spiegelman, so if you'd like to read some words after you've read the stories, read his introduction and notes. This is a beautiful gift for art lovers and a great choice for some graphic novel readers.
From Elizabeth: Revolution by Jennifer Donnelly ($18.99, sale price $15.19) In this beautifully written young adult novel, Andi Alpers, a high school senior in a prestigious Brooklyn private school goes to Paris with her father and finds a diary belonging to Alexandrine Paradis, a young actress who finds herself in the role of a companion and spy in the household of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. Two hundred years may separate these two young women but there are many similarities between their lives as they both wrestle with challenges and difficult problems. Andi is grieving after the death of her young brother and angry with her father for leaving to pursue his career in another city. Common themes of redemption, willingness to change and music are effectively woven into this well researched story. For ages 14 and up.
From Vicky: Llama Llama Holiday Drama by Anna Dewdney ($16.99, sale price $13.59) It is so hard to wait for the holidays to come!! Llama Llama is having fun, but Mama Llama is busy and there is so much activity! What is a baby llama to do? I laughed out loud at the really clever rhymes and illustrations. This book is utterly charming, warm and clever. As the story comes to a close, you can literally feel the warmth and love as Mama and baby llama remember the true gift of the holiday. This is a perfect book for Moms and their little ones.

NEW TO THE SHELVES
In The Company of Others by Jan Karon ($27.95, sale price $22.36) Father Tim and Cynthia arrive in the west of Ireland, intent on researching his Kavanagh ancestry from the comfort of a charming fishing lodge. The charm, however, is broken entirely when Cynthia startles a burglar and sprains her already-injured ankle.
The Pig Goes To Hog Heaven by Joseph Caldwell ($13.99) In the third book of this trilogy, and in the truly Irish sense, almost nothing seems to be over; disappeared characters rematerialize, romances that seemed dead burst back to ardent life, and even Taddy and Brid, Castle Kissane's comely spirits, find new meaning in Yogi's remark as they resolve themselves into much-longed-for conclusions. And the pig, ah yes, the pig! The pig who started it all by rooting up the bones of the past and tipping many lives topsy turvy-that pig goes wee wee wee all the way-er-home.
Life by Keith Richards ($29.99, sale price $23.99) The long-awaited autobiography of the guitarist, songwriter, singer, and founding member of the Rolling Stones. With The Stones, Keith Richards created the songs that roused the world, and he lived the original rock and roll life. Now, at last, the man himself tells his story of life in the crossfire hurricane.
Scorpions: The Battles and Triumphs of FDR's Great Supreme Court Justices by Noah Feldman ($30.00, sale price $24.00) Feldman tells the story of the battles and triumphs of FDR's great Supreme Court justices--four men who began as close allies and friends of Roosevelt, but the quest to shape a new Constitution led them to competition and sometimes downright warfare.
Travels in Siberia by Ian Frazier ($30.00, sale price $24.00) The bestselling author of "Great Plains" delivers a dazzling Russian travelogue in which he trains his eye for unforgettable detail on Siberia. He explores many aspects of this storied, often grim region and writes about the geography, the resources, the native people, the history, the 40-below midwinter afternoons, and even the bugs.
Fancy Nancy and the Fabulous Fashion Boutique by Jane O'Connor ($17.99, sale price $14.39) Fancy Nancy's Fabulous Fashion Boutique is a huge success, but it's also Nancy's little sister's birthday. And when it starts to rain, her birthday party might be ruined. Nancy knows she has to come up with a brilliant idea--and fast.
Star Wars Brickmaster by DK ($29.99, sale price $23.99) With this book and kit, kids can create incredible spacecraft from the world of "Star Wars," or build their own unique warp-speed ships. Dynamic full-color photos combine with clearly labeled instructions, trivia, and a compelling story to make the Brickmaster kits perfect for all LEGO fans. Includes more than 240 bricks to make eight models and two figures.
The Lost Hero by Rick Riordan ($18.99, sale price $15.19) After saving Olympus, Percy and friends have rebuilt Camp Half-Blood, where the next generation of demigods must now prepare for a chilling prophecy of their own. In a new series from Rick Riordan, fans return to the world of Camp Half-Blood. Here, a new group of heroes will inherit a quest. But to survive the journey, they'll need the help of some familiar demigods.
The Klutz Book of Inventions ($19.99, sale price $15.99) For fans of The Klutz Enclyclopedia of Immaturity, introducing The Klutz Book of Inventions. This volume is a 200-page catalog of never-before-seen contraptions that are equal parts brilliant, useful, and ridiculous. None of them exist as actual products, but in a better world, a funnier world, they would all be household essentials. |
