Dolly Llama???
I love putting this newsletter together. I really do. Why? Because in the process I find out the most interesting things!

Dolly Parton made two of Anna Dewdney's Llama Llama books into a musical with music that she wrote???? You can see a glimpse at the beginning of this video. You gotta love Dolly Parton. As she says..."I'm not going to limit myself just because people won't accept the fact that I can do something else."

STAFF RECOMMENDATIONS

writing circleFrom Karen: The Writing Circle by Corinne Demas ($23.99, our price $19.19, to be released July 6th). Local author Corinne Demas' novel is an utterly absorbing tale of relationships and the art of writing. Tragedies, affairs and scandal rock the writer's group known as the 'Leopardi Circle' which is composed of both aspiring and acclaimed authors, entangled in divorces and affairs with each other. Professional jealousy and sexual tension ensue but this is not gossipy chick lit, it is a wonderfully crafted, engaging novel.

henry winkler with janellFrom Karen: Hitch-22: A Memoir by Christopher Hitchens ($26.99) As the infamous Hitchens, world traveler, and journalist approached age 60, he decided to give us all a birthday present with his witty and wise memoir. As he recounts in Hitch-22, he witnessed war in many of the world's most dangerous places, along the way meeting and becoming friends with many of the world's literary luminaries, including Salman Rushdie and Ian McEwan. He bares all in his characteristically droll manner. A thoroughly enjoyable, and educational, read!

How To Clean a Hippopotamus by Steve JenkinsFrom Nancy: How To Clean a Hippopotamus: A Look At Unusual Animal Partnerships by Steve Jenkins and Robin Page ($16.00). I love picture books by Steve Jenkins. They explore all sorts of fascinating topics in the natural world and his collage illustrations are amazingly detailed and beautiful. This new book all about the ways different animals help each other, is no exception. This is a topic well explored in other places, I mean we all know about the clown fish and the anenome, right? This book goes much further. Did you know about the marine iguana and the Sally Lightfoot crab? Or the warthog and the mongoose? Interesting and attractive enough to appeal to younger kids but informative and detailed enough to be of interest to older budding naturalists up to 6th grade!

yarn by Kyoko MoriFrom Elizabeth: Yarn: Remembering the Way Home by Kyoko Mori ($15.95)  In this beautiful and poignant memoir, the author artfully tells her story of growing up in Japan and coming to the States to attend college.  As she comes to terms with the memory of her mother's suicide and the breakdown of her marriage, Mori finds great solace in her knitting. Interspersed in her story she shares the fascinating history of knitting, weaving and spinning.  This book is a treasure that the reader will savor page by page.

ice marginFrom Elizabeth: The Ice Margin by Marcia Woodruff Dalton ($16.00) A story of three generations of women who are strongly attached to Cape Cod. The author writes with compassion about the strength of family and friendship set against the landscape and seascape of the Cape. Taking the title from a geological term gives you an idea of the important role of the land to the story. Anna's oldest daughter is an invalid as a result of a surgical accident. After the death of an aunt, Anna brings her two daughters to spend the summer in the house the family inherited. Through unlikely friendships and the reading of Aunt Phoebe's journal of many years a tale of happiness and heartache unfolds.

the passage by Justin CroninFrom Vicky: The Passage by Justin Cronin ($27.00, our price $22.36) If you're looking for an utterly gripping thriller this summer, The Passage is the book for you! It tells the story of a post-apocolyptic world after a scientific experiment goes wrong unleashing powerful, evil vampire-like beings. This is the story of a small group of survivors, a world in total chaos and a small and mysterious girl who holds the key to the future. We come to care about the characters in the book and the writing is great. I'm not a vampire or horror book reader and Stephen King's novels are generally way too scary for me (except I did love The Shawshank Redemption.....). And I loved this book!

every soul a starFrom Vicky: Every Soul a Star by Wendy Mass ($6.99).  I adore this book! It's a great story about friendship and science and it's filled with wonderful and believable characters   A total eclipse of the sun is coming to Moon Shadow campground in the western mountains and among the people gathered for the event are three teens: Ally, a nature girl and daughter of the campground owners; Bree, who is interested only in fashion and becoming a model; and Jack, who is overweight and struggling in school.  The book is funny and touching and the friendships are so real as all three face changes and challenges.  Thrown into the mix is a ton of information about eclipses and it's fascinating!  Wendy Mass is the author of a number of great books for ages 10-14 and one of my new favorite authors!

mr rosenblum dreams in english by Nathasha SolomonsFrom Vicky: Mr. Rosenblum Dreams in English by Natasha Solomons ($23.99, our price $19.19)  Jack and Sadie Rosenblum are Jewish refugees who escape with their young daughter to England in 1937.  On arrival, Jack is handed a pamphlet on how to assimilate into English culture. An optimist from the word "go," Jack not only tries to follow every suggestion, he starts adding his own, believing that if he follows the rules he will be accepted into English society which offers them economic opportunity, but social rejection. All his work becomes focused on one goal: to become a member of an English golf club. Undaunted, even by the most vicious of insults, he decides (without an ounce of experience), to build his own golf club in Dorset on land he purchases sight unseen - and without his wife's knowledge. The book is has a wonderful portrait of marriage, English society and small town English life.
NEW TO THE SHELVES
promises to keep by Jane GreenPromises To Keep by Jane Green ($25.95, our price $20.76). From the author of "Dune Road" and "Beach House" comes a new novel about a family suddenly thrown together when each person receives a shocking note that summons them for one extraordinary summer in Maine. This novel is about the hard choices we have to face, about having to be your parents' child long after you've grown up, and about the enduring nature of love.

short history of cape cod by Robert AllisonA Short History of Cape Cod by Robert Allison ($14.95) This concise narrative covers four colorful centuries. Here are the key events in Cape Cod history, with over twenty personal profiles of historic figures, more than 100 black-and-white photographs, a detailed chronology, and an index. There are enough details here to fascinate the historian and enough stories to fill an enjoyable day at the beach.

The Island by Eli HilderbrandThe Island by Elin Hilderbrand ($25.99, our price $20.79) A woman, her two daughters, and her sister spend the month of July on rustic, charming Tuckernuck Island off the coast of Nantucket. Secrets and intrigue soon make their way to the surface, as Hilderbrand ("The Castaways", "Blue Bistro") weaves a story of summer suspense. (This book will be released on July 6th.)

cookbook collector by Allegra GoodmanThe Cookbook Collector by Allegra Goodman ($26.00, our price $20.80) Goodman weaves together the worlds of Silicon Valley and rare book collecting in this new novel. Sisters Emily and Jessamine Bach are opposites in every way: Emily is making a fortune in Silicon Valley, Jess works in an antiquarian bookstore (a great setting for a book, if we do say so ourselves!). The Cookbook Collector is a novel about getting and spending, and about the substitutions we make when we can't find what we're looking for. Above all it is about holding on to what is real in a virtual world: love that stays.

How To Ride A Dragon's Storm by Cressida CowellHow To Ride a Dragon's Storm (How To Train Your Dragon Book #6) by Cressida Cowell ($10.99)  Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III, everyone's favorite reluctant Viking hero, has three months, five days, and six hours to discover America, get back to Berk, save his father, battle Polarserpents, and win the annual Inter-Tribal Friendly Swimming Race. Can he do it?

Camp Edwards and Otis Air Force BaseCamp Edwards and Otis Air Force Base (Images of America) by Donald Cann ($21.99) When land started to run out in central Massachusetts, the National Guard began to search for sufficient space on which to hold their annual training. They found what they needed on Cape Cod. This land would become Camp Edwards and later Otis Air National Guard Base. When World War II loomed, the base became a significant training area for units heading overseas and a major duty station for thousands of America's military men and women.

NEW IN PAPERBACK

hunger gamesThe Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins ($8.99, to be released on July 6th). Katniss is a 16-year-old girl living with her mother and younger sister in the poorest district of Panem, the remains of what used be the United States. Long ago the districts waged war on the Capitol and were defeated. As part of the surrender terms, each district agreed to send one boy and one girl to appear in an annual televised event called, "The Hunger Games." The terrain, rules, and level of audience participation may change but one thing is constant: kill or be killed. When Kat's sister is chosen by lottery, Kat steps up to go in her place.

OLD BOOKS
We have restocked our used fiction shelves downstairs. There are many many recent titles down there by popular authors. You can find a hardcover of an author you love for less than a new paperback! ($4-6)

Our Thornton Burgess collection has greatly expanded. We have first editions and early printings of many of the titles, some with dust jackets. Also new to the shelf are books in the Mother West Wind series (Grosset & Dunlap editions with dust jackets, $15-20).

It may seem counter-intuitive to think about knitting sweaters in the summer, but actually it makes sense! You can't start a sweater in December and plan on wearing it the next day. To help plan ahead, we have added many books to our knitting sections. Traditional Knitting from the Scottish and Irish Isles With over 30 Glorious Designs by Debbie Bliss ($25)
Knitting For Pets by Vogue Knitting ($6) Includes directions for dog hats, sweaters and mittens!  For your dog....not for you with doggies on them!
Summer and Winter Knitting : Rowan's Designer Collection by Stephen Sheard ($6.00) Really cute sweater pattern in here....a sweater with a pattern of scotty dogs! You knit it, I'll wear it :-)
