Did You Know This? I admit it...I am pretty excited for Carl Hiaasen's visit on July 30th. So excited, in fact, that I was perusing YouTube to see an interview with him (just to get an idea of what he might be like).
How cool is this? He actually discovered Christopher Paolini who wrote Eragon! Listen to this...it's a great story! Click Here!

Titcomb's Bookshop Book Club
| | For June, we will be reading Pulitzer prize winner Tinkers by Paul Harding ($14.95, our price is $11.96). The discussion will take place on Tuesday June 15th at 7:00pm at the Bookshop.
BOOK CLUB FAQ
I don't know anyone in book club so I don't think I should go. That's part of the fun! You will (a) meet new people and (b) actually discuss the book instead of looking at vacation pictures and discussing kids/grandkids!
I don't always feel comfortable sharing my opinions. Perfect! You will be in a group of 20-30 people. Your silence won't be noticed and you can think about how right your opinion is, even if you don't share it.
Do I need to sign up? Is there a test? There is no registration. All book club discussions are open to all. As far as a test...ummm you need to be able to decipher a southern accent (Elizabeth's) and walk downstairs (we meet in the lower level, aka the basement).
I can't make it on Tuesdays. That's OK. Read the book anyway! The books are always 20% off during that month and it is great to expand your reading beyond what you would normally pick out (Elizabeth does have a greater than 90% success rate of picking books people love.)
Are we good now? Are you coming? |
Silly Bandz are here!
| |
Have no idea what I am talking about? Well Silly Bandz are thin strips of silicone formed into a variety of shapes. Kids wear them as bracelets. When they are on your wrist, they just look like a thin bracelet. Pull them off and voila! They resume their shape. They come in many different packages of 24 (ocean creatures, princess theme, rock bandz, etc).

Pre-Sales Benefit Cape Cod K9 Relief Fund
| | This is a nice promotion that we are participating in. The publisher is offering to donate 10% of the cover price of copies of A Dog's Purpose by W. Bruce Cameron ($22.99, our price $18.39) ordered between June 1st and July 1st.
The novel is coming out on July 6th, so you would need to order the book from us before July 1st.
Here is a description of the book:
All dogs go to heaven... unless they have unfinished business here on earth. This is the story of one dog's search for his purpose over the course of several lives.
Surprised to find himself reborn as a rambunctious puppy after a tragically short life as a stray mutt, Bailey finds himself in the loving arms of 8-year-old Ethan. During their adventures, Bailey joyously discovers how to be a good dog.
Reborn yet again, Bailey wonders--will he ever find his purpose? |

This photograph has tickled us all, so we needed to share it with you! For our event with Lauren Myracle, Dad's (Ralph Titcomb to you!) job was to meet Lauren and take her picture with the statue for our author wall. Lauren took one look at the wall of photos and said, "No one's ever sat on his shoulders" She proceeded to scramble right onto him! The funniest thing is that no Titcomb child, grandchild, cousin, in-law or out-law has ever climbed the statue.....in 37 years! Then along came Lauren to shake things up. |

STAFF RECOMMENDATIONS
From Edye: The Seven Year Switch by Claire Cook ($24.99, our price $19.99). Claire Cook nails it with her newest novel! Jill is a single mom indulging her passion for cultural affairs by teaching exotic cooking classes and manning the phones for the "Girlfriend Getaways" travel agency. As she struggles to make ends meet, her deadbeat estranged husband travels the world in the Peace Corps. Just as Jill decides to move forward in her life, her husband shows up again, wanting to resume their family life. Cook creates great characters we can all identify with in this fast paced, perfect summer read.
From Karen: The
Nobodies Album by Carolyn Parkhurst ($25.95, our price $20.76) A wonderfully
absorbing novel by the author of Dogs of Babel. This is a literary
mystery involving a bestselling novelist and her son, a rock star
accused of murder. It builds in suspense. Revelations regarding the past and the realization that one can never truly know
everything about another person are at its core.
From Elizabeth: God Is An Englishman by R.F. Delderfield ($14.99) This wonderful English family saga was originally published in 1970 and is recently back in print. After a few years in Crimea and India, Adam Swann abandons his family's tradition of military service and enters the world of commerce. He marries Henrietta Rawlinson and they begin a life of adventure together. Delderfield writes with a strong sense of time and place and the reader is quickly swept up into this absorbing story of life in Victorian England. It is a must read for all Anglophiles.
From Elizabeth: Coop: A Family, A Farm and the Pursuit of One Good Egg by Michael Perry ($14.99) Perry is man of many talents: a poet, registered nurse, EMT and firefighter, freelance writer and new father. He fulfills a dream of having his own "farm" with two pigs, a dozen chickens, a Guinea pig and a large garden. Be prepared to shed tears of laughter and sadness as you read about building a chicken coop, the death of a dear friend and family members, homeschooling a seven year old and the birth of a new child. The writing is rich and eloquent and you will want to share this book with a friend.
From Karen: The Imperfectionists by Tom Rachman ($25.00, our price $20.00) Wildly witty, this novel's chapters are each like short stories, yet are all connected. Very intelligent fiction, set in Rome at an English language newspaper. The reporters' and editors' personal travails are funny and touching. Funny and sad, very true renderings of the human failings of ambition and love. The author is a journalist who has been stationed in Rome and Paris. Highly recommended to those who enjoy literary fiction.
From Kathleen:The Quiet
Book by Deborah Underwood ($12.95)The delightful pictures of animals (or are they a child's cherished
stuffed animals?) and simple sentences make this book an absolute joy.
Quiet moments throughout any day are superbly conveyed from "first one
awake quiet" to "do iguanas bite? quiet". This book will be fun to read
aloud and explore with toddlers. (ages 3-6)
From Nancy: The
Problem With The Puddles by Kate Feiffer ($16.99). The
only thing Mr. and Mrs. Puddle can agree on is disagreeing. When they
can't agree on what kind of dog to get, they get two--and name both
Sally. When the family rushes back to the city from their country house
and leave the Sallys behind, what's to become of them? This is a great
silly adventure that would be a perfect summer read-aloud for almost any
age or a fun read for a 2-4th grader.

OLD BOOKS
Father's Day is coming up! (June 20th) Since I was your personal shopper for Mother's Day, it only seems fair that I try it again for Father's Day. Since I likely don't actually know your Dad (but maybe I do if he's a customer) I am sticking to some tried and true male regions of the bookshop! Artillery from The Civil War To The Present Day by Michael Haskew ($18.00). A large oblong hardcover put out by Metro Books, this book is filled with illustrations and photographs of all kinds of cool exploding things. The Half Not Told: The Civil War in a Frontier Town by Preston Filbert ($10.00) A hard cover in a dust jacket that was published in 2001. An interesting look at the Civil War from the standpoint of the western territories, the book describes what happened in the frontier town of St. Joseph, Missouri. Four Years of Fighting: A Volume of Personal Observation With The Army and Navy from The First Battle of Bull Run To The Fall of Richmond by Charles Carleton Coffin ($75.00) Three quarter leather bound hardcover printed in 1866. If you are a Civil War buff, I cannot imagine anything more interesting than reading someone's first hand account of actually fighting in the war. Mannhatta: A Natural History of New York City by Eric Sanderson ($20.00). This is actually a very recent publication done in 2009 by a landscape ecologist with the Wildlife Conservation Society. Gorgeous book for NYC-lovers. Is your Dad a mariner? Heavy Weather Sailing by K. Adlard Coles ($6.50). I would trust this man's information. He spent years in the Baltic and then won the Transatlantic Race of 1950 and was elected Yachtsman of the Year after the "exceptionally heavy weather of the Fastnet Race in 1957". Wooden Boats: From Sculls To Yachts by Joseph Gribbons ($10.00). A large coffee table book with photographs of wooden boats around the world and the boatyards that build them. Peterson Field Guides: Atmosphere: Clouds, Rain, Snow, Storms by Vincent Schaefer ($4.50). What better gift to the sailor than understanding the clouds? How about Food? The Perfect Potato: Over 100 Fabulous Recipes from Appetizers to Desserts For Potato Lovers Everywhere by Diane Simone Vezza ($4.00) I opened the book to Goat Cheese and Potato Tart. I'm in! The Frugal Gourmet Cooks With Wine by Jeff Smith ($4.00) Williams-Sonoma Kitchen Library: Grilling ($4.50) How can you miss with a beautifully photographed book with recipes like Garlic Skewered Shrimp (the garlic is on the skewer!) My last suggestion is a little unusual, but for the right Dad it would be a huge hit. The Random House Dictionary of the English Language: The Unabridged Edition ($15.00) I know, I know, you're thinking....dictionary? The man can Google anything he needs to know. But...to a real lover of the language 1,960 pages of words from A to ZZZ (they really do define "ZZZ"!) and a section on grammar is beautiful thing! This is the 1966 edition. (FYI to all of the Titcomb siblings reading this....this is the same edition we grew up playing The Dictionary Game with!) To search a portion of our old books inventory, Click Here

You Had How Many Authors Come?
We know that a lot of you already know this because you came to the event...but...for the rest of you...we had such a great time at our Local Author Open House on Sunday May 30th. We hosted 26 local authors! We put tents out on the front driveway and had tables of books. The authors mingled with everyone and were available to discuss their books, sign books or talk about the publishing process. We had such a great time that we are sure to try it again. Thank you to all of our participating authors. If you missed the event, stop by the Bookshop in the next week or so. Many of the books that were featured will be available for sale.
We had to show you this author picture...yup there are 26 in there!
