Happy Earth Day!
With so many Earth Day activities and events planned this year, it may be hard to choose what to do. There's one event, however, that is not to be missed.
Disney Nature's film "Oceans" begins today in theaters across the U.S. It's an awesome film with incredible photography, as you can imagine. After all, it's from Disney!
We encourage you to see the movie and then send us your ticket stubs. You'll be entered in a drawing for the "Oceans" book, a companion to the movie. Not just a "coffee-table book," it chronicles the making of the movie, special equipment invented and the arduous task of waiting hours, days, sometimes weeks, for particular sealife to appear for filming.
You have a month to see the movie and send us the ticket stubs before we draw a winner on May 22nd. Our address is PO Box 968, Kennebunkport,ME 04046

Earth Day Celebration
Sat., April 24
at Laudholm Farm
This year's Earth Day festivities at the Wells Reserve sound like a perfect outing for your weekend itinerary. The festivities run from 10 am to 2 pm on Saturday, featuring over 15 exhibitors and demonstrations, a Discovery Program, food and music.
At 12:30 pm, the Mousam River Ramblers will perform and I make special note of this. The Ramblers are home-grown Kennebunk fellas, creating quite a Maine buzz with their bluegrass-folk-rock style. One of the Ramblers, Max Robinson, is a barista at Dock Square Coffee in K'port. When he's not writing music, practicing or mixing coffee drinks, he's a junior at Kennebunk High.
(Enjoy the day and say "hey" to Max for me!)

The Deliciousness of Discoveries
I've been jazzed for a few weeks now.
I keep stumbling on to things, new to me, that are energizing, fascinating and make me wonder what took me so long to make these discoveries.
For instance, Maine, the magazine, which launched last September. I love this publication so much that it is not allowed in the kitchen for fear of food stains on the cover. At a time when everything is electronic, Maine is a tasty treat to hold in your hands and read the old-fashioned way. Browse, savor, re-read, save. The April issue featured a piece on Kennebunkport by Lynn Kippax Jr. If you missed it, we have a few copies at Beach Grass.
Another discovery...Jack Johnson's new CD is due out in June, titled "To the Sea". One of his new songs getting air time is "You and Your Heart" and the video (find it on YouTube) makes me crazy that I never learned to surf.
And then, the cherry on my ice cream sundae...I meet a jewelry designer from Kennebunk whose creativity and eco-inspiration is a perfect fit at Beach Grass.
I'm pleased to introduce Kate Aiello Designs, "eco-saavy jewelry inspired by life in The Kennebunks." www.kateaiello.com
Beach stone earrings | It's hard to pick a favorite design in her collection, but the piece that wowed me is the beach stone earrings from Kennebunk Beach. Dangling from sterling silver hoops, the stones are so simple, yet chic. For anyone with an attachment to our beaches, anyone who has ever pocketed some beach stones, this is as much about the preciousness of nature as it is fashion.
A Kennebunk Beach heart stone necklace, now how rare is that?
Kate's work is a blending of her love of cottage style and a
Heart stone necklace | sensitivity to the environment. She scours salvage shops and beaches to find the eco-gems of her jewelry. Most is one-of-a-kind and constantly evolving.
In her words, the "jewelry designs embrace a dedication to making every decision thoughtful, as well as responsible for the environment."
I can't wait for your next visit to Beach Grass to see for yourself.

Celebrate
World Oceans Day
in The Kennebunks
June 8 -13
Seas the Day! is the name for our local celebration of World Oceans Day on June 8th. Recognized internationally, World Oceans Day is coordinated by The Ocean Project, a non-profit based in Providence, RI.
I'm very excited about the celebration that is taking shape. The festivities will begin Tuesday, June 8 at Colony Beach in Kennebunkport, hosted by the Colony Hotel. We'll start off with a beach clean-up, followed by beach activities, a cook-out and entertainment.
We'll end the day at Alisson's Restaurant where the weekly Trivia Night competition will focus on beach and ocean themed questions.
On Wednesday, June 9th, the One Dock restaurant at the Kennebunkport Inn, will dedicate 15% of the evening proceeds to The Ocean Project. One Dock's dine-for-a-cause program, known as Worthy Wednesday, has been very successful this year, raising over $3,000 for local organizations. This will be a delicious way to celebrate World Oceans Day.
Activities through the week are developing and will include a community photo at Colony Beach, hoping to attract hundreds of beach goers to stand in the form of a fish for an aerial photo. There's a movie night in the works and opportunities to tour a sailboat and experience the world of lobstering.
I hope you'll mark your calendar today to join us on June 8th as we Seas the Day! The schedule of activities will be posted on Facebook, Seas the Day in the Kennebunks (become a fan!) and at www.seasthedayinthekennebunks.blogspot.com
