  • Opera in Winter
    deWaart

The Chorale's much-applauded appearances as an opera chorus usually come around the beginning of August, at the close of Sommerfest. This year, however, we're also waxing operatic in January.

On Thursday and Saturday, January 14 and 16, you can hear us in the vivacious choral parts of The Rake's Progress, Igor Stravinsky's English-language masterpiece, in a concert version with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra. The conductor is former Minnesota Orchestra music director and SPCO artistic partner-designate Edo de Waart (pictured above), who this week is jetting between the Ordway and the Metropolitan Opera.

Performances start at 7:30 - don't be late! For tickets, call the SPCO box office at 651-291-1144 or click here.

More fun than a barrel of...
    Monkey Dance

The most family-friendly concert of the season? That would be the release performances for The Monkey Dance: All the Kids Are Doin' It - the new CD by Twin Cities folk-rock favorites The Sweet Colleens, featuring the disc debut of our very own Minneapolis Youth Chorus.

Come celebrate this latest MYC milestone on Saturday, January 30, at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., at the Cedar Cultural Center (416 Cedar Ave. S., Minneapolis).
Call 612-338-2674 for tickets, or visit www.thecedar.org.

Men of the Chorale in rehearsal

The Chorale's education programs have been in high gear throughout the current season. But there's a weekend of feverish educational intensity in February that we'd like to alert you to. On Friday, February 19, our Men in Music program presents singers from Como Park, Harding, and Irondale high schools, together with members of the Chorale, in New Brighton.

And on Saturday, February 20, our annual Emerging Conductor performance, hosted by Kathy Saltzman Romey and featuring University of Minnesota doctoral student Christopher Owen, takes place at St. Olaf Catholic Church in Minneapolis.

Both events begin at 7:30 p.m., and both are free. Further details in next month's C-Notes.
