Hello Land's Sake friends,

September is the time of harvest and this season we are especially blessed. The farm stand is brimming with beautiful produce and buzzing with happy customers. Thanks to our partnership with the Town of Weston, we continue to share the harvest with our friends at the Greater Boston Food Bank, Community Servings and Weston's Council on Aging among others. We also experienced a truly remarkable "harvest" of a different kind at our recent 30th Anniversary celebration. On a perfect September evening, nearly 160 friends gathered at the Gateways Barn for a magical evening of food and fun, capped by a spirited auction with items ranging from pies to parties. The evening brought in over $80,000 and it is an understatement to say we are feeling grateful for the bounty that surrounds us. Thank you for helping make this a reality.

Many thanks,
Eric Kreilick
Executive Director

Land's Sake's birthday bash

Once in a great while, a particular set of factors combine to create a truly remarkable experience. This was the case on September 16 when Land's Sake celebrated its 30th anniversary. A perfect September evening in New England, the historic Gateways Barn done up in grand style, great food, thirty years of friends and community, a shared love for and commitment to Land's Sake, and the tremendous generosity of all those present combined to create a magical evening. The overwhelming success of the evening marks the trajectory of our next thirty years and challenges us to enlarge our vision of what we can achieve.

The Land's Sake staff and board are deeply grateful to you for your generous support. The evening generated more than $80,000, a Land's Sake record! Your generosity gives us the ability to fund important needs that will help our staff invest their passion in our farm, forest and education programs more efficiently. The farm will soon have an Athens 55 Disc Harrow and will be able to return Peter Hyde's to him! What a wonderful demonstration of support for our farm and farmers. Also, we will soon have a new BSC Flail mower for our sustainable land management operation plus new food processing equipment to aid our work with kids as we teach them where their food comes from. Finally the entire staff will undergo safety and first aid training in November.  Because of your support, Land's Sake will be a safer and more efficient organization.

The evening also kicked off our "$300K for the 30th Campaign" in a perfect way. We're grateful for the seeds-quite a lot of them!-that you provided. We hope you will continue with us throughout the campaign. If you would like to join the committee that will cultivate the campaign over the course of the coming year, please contact Eric Kreilick, Alyson Muzila, or John Marchiony.

So much fun was had at our anniversary celebration that we hope to repeat this event next year to conclude our 30th year! We'd love your help next year, and between now and then. Please email us with any suggestions, requests or offers.

Farm report

Autumn is officially here!

The tomatoes are still pouring in (but definitely slowing down.) Our veggies have spilled out of the farmstand and into the area in front of it. We have multiple varieties of apples from Carlson Orchards which taste delicious.  Corn is still here for only a few more days so hurry out before it's gone for the year. It is that time of year, September, when summer crops and fall ones overlap. Enjoy it while it lasts!

The farmstand is open through October 31st and will close November 1st.
Land's Sake's local firewood now on sale

It's not too early to place your order for a half or full cord of local, seasoned firewood. Full cords are $375 and half cords are $225. Click here to learn more, including our delivery options.
School is back in session
The school year is in full swing which means our Education staff and volunteers are busier than ever. Elementary students in the Weston Public schools have been touring the farm and learning about plant parts. The Green Power Fall program for middle school students is already in its fourth week where students are helping in the fields, caring for chickens and learning about the agricultural life cycle during a whole new, cooler season.

Soon enough we'll be hosting students at our Maple Sugar House. Teachers, Scout leaders, homeschoolers, youth leaders please make your plans early to bring your students to Land's Sake this winter for a fun, educational tour of a wonderful New England traditional: maple sugaring.

Finally, the Education staff is looking for one or two exceptional students to hire as Junior Apprentices for the winter season. Winter apprenticeships are geared toward students interested in sustainable woodlot and orchard management, traditional maple syrup operations, environmental education, or those who just couldn't get enough of Green Power. During the winter session, students will work and learn alongside Land's Sake staff in the Highland Street forest, the Concord Road orchard and the Bill McElwain Sugar House.

Junior Apprentices:
- for 9th-12th grades
- Jan. 9-Apr. 17; every other Sat. from 9am-4pm
- Cost: none for the 9-week session
- Stipend paid to students: $5.00/hour

For more information about how to become a Junior Apprentice or about any of our education programs, please visit our website or contact Doug Cook, Education Director, at greenpower@landssake.org or call 781-893-1162.
Once again, thank you for your ongoing support of Land's Sake. We are so proud of our work and of what we have accomplished together with you. Happy Autum to you all!

cheers,
the Land's Sake staff
