The kids are alright!
Doug Cook, our Education Director, and Diane Litwin, our Education Intern, have been busy the past few weeks running the popular Green Power Summer and Farm & Forest Explorers programs for kids. They also recently hosted a large number of students over the course of a week as part of the New England Chinese Youth Summer Camp. Our partnership with Regis College for this camp is just one example of how Land's Sake executes its educational mission locally and beyond. Students visit Land's Sake to help plant Tatsoi as a part of the New England Chinese Youth Summer Camp. In cooperation with the Summer Star Foundation, students were introduced to organic techniques for growing Asian style vegetables and herbs. Campers were asked to reflect on social and agricultural issues affecting both Chinese and New England farmers in local and global communities. The produce from this camp will be donated to the Greater Boston Food Bank. |
Farm report
Assistant grower Zannah Porter planting cherry tomatoes. Cherry tomatoes will be available for picking at the main farm next week.
We are glad to report the farm stand is bursting with our own fresh vegetables including eggplant (five varieties!) sweet and hot peppers, summer squash, onions, potatoes, beets and carrots, plus bread, corn and fruit from nearby farms. Tomatoes will be rolling in starting next week. Also the CSA shares continue to be full but the drought is beginning to take its toll. Beets and carrots still in the field are showing signs of extreme dehydration. Summer squash and basil appear droopy and tired in their beds. Tomatoes, eggplant and peppers are faring the best. The farm crew has been making heroic efforts to irrigate but prayers for rain would be appreciated!
Now is the time to start thinking about storage vegetables and canning. Stop by for storage-friendly onions, garlic and potatoes. Also, winter squash will be here before too long!
This year we are participating in a very special farmers market in Dorchester. Please click here for the full story including a picture of our own Assistant Farm Manager Stephanie Andrews who manages our farmers market. Bringing our produce to Dorchester takes us full circle to the days when Bill McElwain, founder of the Green Power program, delivered his produce to the same neighborhoods in the 70s. Thank you for helping to make this possible.

Saying Farewell
It is with sadness that we say goodbye to one of our founders, Doug Henderson. Please click here to read more about Mr. Henderson and the role he played, along with others, in creating Land's Sake. Even after his retirement, Mr. Henderson continued to enthusiastically support Land's Sake. He was in the habit of visiting our farm stand many summers bearing an armload of hydrangea blooms from his garden for the farm staff to dry and display. We shall miss his visits and will continue to honor his legacy. |
Get ready for Green Power Fall!
We are quickly approaching the peak of the growing season and the end of summer vacation. This means its time for the fall sessions of Green Power to begin soon. Students can look forward to seeing the fields in full bloom, harvesting and pressing apples and closing up the field near the end of November. We hope to see your child out on the farm!
For more information about Green Power Fall and our outdoor education programs for kids, please visit our website or contact Doug Cook, Education Director, at greenpower@landssake.org or call 781-893-1162.
