Metropolitan Counseling Services Listening, Caring, Helping
November 2008

Dear Friends,

Change is in the air! Even the leaves have been especially beautiful this year, as if to defy the gloom of economic predictions. It is our hope at MCS that we will be able to help the growing number of people needing our services. So, as we do every year at this time, we look to you to help us fulfill our mission.

It is the season of our Annual Giving Campaign. In an increasingly troubled world, MCS provides a safe haven for people suffering from mental and emotional concerns. Our low client fees do not come close to covering our costs, which is why we need you. Even a small contribution can help close the gap between a $25 fee and the cost of providing that service. Some of our clients are finding it increasingly difficult to pay even our lowest fee, so contributions also go to pay for scholarships for them.

This is also the season of thanks-giving. In that spirit, I thank all of you who support MCS with your referrals, your money and your good will. This year it is more important than ever for us to join together to help adults create positive change in their lives through affordable psychotherapy and counseling.

As you receive our annual letter, it is my wish that you will support MCS again, or for the first time. If you visit our website you'll see all of the exciting things that are happening here. Yes, change is here, and our clients are reaching out to us with hope that we will help them realize change in their lives, too. Thank you for joining with us to make a difference!

Best regards,
Kathie Thodeson, MS, LPC
Executive Director

MCS is dedicated to providing quality, affordable counseling to people who could not otherwise afford such services. As the stock market falls, jobs disappear and money stresses mount, MCS becomes an even more important community resource.

Over the past few months, MCS has been featured on the Atlanta Journal Constitution @Issue page, on the 11:00 news at 11Alive, and on Fox TV's Health Watch. Board member Brian Kammer felt moved by a story of a woman who felt so overwhelmed by economic hardship that she killed herself. His op-ed piece in the AJC highlights the importance of getting emotional support during tough times.

Both the 11Alive and Fox TV stories prompted calls to the center from people who are grateful to find affordable help. MCS need not be Atlanta's best kept secret! We're providing life-changing help to people who need it the most: especially during these difficult economic times.

    Hello, Metropolitan Counseling Services calling...

MCS may be calling you on Wednesday, November 19 between 10 am and noon, or on Thursday evening between 6 and 8 PM. Board members, volunteers and staff members will be on the phones to connect with those in the community who want to give to MCS. We'll be accepting pledges, credit card information, and directing people to our print and website materials.

Thanks in advance for talking with us! This is our first ever phonathon, and we're looking forward to sharing more about MCS with you!

    Thank you, UPS!

On September 23rd, the UPS Women's Leadership Development (WLD) hosted a "Domestic Violence Awareness" forum and silent auction. Metropolitan Counseling Services, Ahimsa House and Partnership Against Domestic Violence were the pressenters and beneficiaries at this event.

The program was interesting and informative, and was well-attended by UPS staff and other community leaders. Each organization offered information on various aspects of domestic violence, and met with participants after the program.

Many thanks to Anne Bowen-Long, MCS board member, who came up with the idea for this collaborative event. Anne was ably assisted by her colleague Cheryl Fulginiti, who assembled an impressive array of silent auction items. The UPS event raised thousands of dollars, which were divided among the three nonprofits.

MCS was proud to be a part of this innovative and collaborative event. We had a chance to meet with other organizations on this important topic, and to provide needed information to the community. Thank you UPS!
