Tasting Notes

2009 LONE BIRCH RED BLEND

Red blends are the hottest trend in the wine industry these days and from the folks who bring us the outstanding line up of Airfield wines, here is another sure fire winner. A blend consisting of 7 grape varietals, Merlot, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Barbera, Sangiovese, Cabernet Franc and Cinsault, flavors of deep cherry and red currant fruit marry well with the licorice, nutmeg and soft spice characteristics. The grapes are culled their Yakima Valley vineyards that have been producing great fruit since the 1940's. Weighing in at a whopping 14.8% alcohol, this prize fighter is sure to be a winner for a long time to come.

2010 ROCK WALL VIOGNIER

For their complexity, uniqueness and ability to be so food friendly, I have always said that if I was to drink one white wine varietal for the rest of my life, it would be Viognier. Trouble is, most of the good to great ones come at a hefty price. But when you find one that is easy on the pocketbook, let the good times roll. Winemaker Shauna Rosenblum has hit one out of the park, with plenty of Gold Medals from tastings across the country to prove it. Fruity yet dry, it shines with plenty of pineapple, honeysuckle, peach, honeydew melon and light citrusy fruit that coats the palate from start to finish. This very small production wine, with Mendocino County fruit, is wrapped around a bold and seductive structure, and all I can say is, get while the gettin's good.

2008 SHINAS "THE EXECUTIONER"

Last year, Champane's Wine Cellars was the only place to get the 2007 vintage in the entire United States. The new 2008 is even rarer to find in the whole country. With yields so low, due to an extremely difficult harvest, only 6 barrels of Shiraz and 4 barrels of Cabernet Sauvignon were available to make their flagship wine. With a touch of Viognier added to soften this big beast of a wine, there's plenty of dark fruit and zesty spice to satisfy the heartiest of palates. It's as huge as an Aussie wine can come, but not at our low price! This is one for the cellar my friends. With a little time and patience, you will be rewarded beyond your wildest dreams. As the name in fact says, it worth dying for!

DID YOU KNOW.................... that vermouth is a fortified wine flavored with herbs and quinine. It comes both sweet and dry and gets its name from the German word "Wermut" which means wormwood, a toxic ingredient that was used in the early versions of Absinthe.

WINE TRIVIA.....................  Who makes the most Saki in the world? You would figure the rice based beverage would be dominated by its origins in Japan, yet in fact, 95% of it is produced in the United States. Cheap versions are the ones you see served warm, but the best, especially labeled junmai gingo, are served chilled. This ancient beverage, served for thousands of years, also comes in an array of different flavor profiles.
