Tasting Notes

2005 WATTLE CREEK TRIPLE PLAY
This field blend red, consisting of Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre and Viognier, hits a grand slam home run for taste, quality and value. Dark purple in color, with notes of blackberry, blueberry and black cherry fruit, all the stars align when the vanilla and nutmeg qualities mix with the bacon fat, smoke, and earthiness that puts this beauty over the top. Paired with a beef, pork and lamb meatloaf, you'd be better served to have an extra bottle on hand. A guaranteed big hit.

2009 PURPLE COWBOY TENACIOUS RED

Saddle up partner and let your taste spurs go Jingle-Jangle-Jingle. From the Paso Robles region of California, this blend of Cabernet, Syrah, Merlot and Barbera is an absolute teeth stainer. Dark red fruit, with touches of smoke, spice and dusty cocoa represent a solid effort from these newcomers. It's got a bit of an exotic edge, with a medium body and strong tannins on the finish. Perfect with barbeque or with a big blue cheese.

2009 SHADY LANE DRY RIESLING

I always enjoy when I recommend a riesling to unsuspecting folks, and they retort that they don't like riesling. And I know exactly what they are thinking? It's too sweet! In fact, the best riesling's in the world are the dry one's, yes there is such a thing as a dry riesling. In the State of Michigan, nobody does it better than winemaker Adam Satchwell from Shady Lane. Rich in fruit of apple, peach, lemon and fig, with honey and spice notes, resulting in a fresh and luscious wine for the senses. With the hot days of Summer around the corner, this is your ticket to a refreshing quaff before, during or after dinner.

2010 KONO SAUVIGNON BLANC

The Kiwi's have darn near cornered the market for the best Sauvignon Blanc's in the world and this New Zealand specialty is a testament to their dominance. Clean and crisp citrus, passionfruit, grapefruit and lime dominate the palate, with a nice acidic finish that lingers impressively long and loud. Better than most that are twice it's price. Out on the boat or cruisin' on the patio, this is a wine that never ceases to please.

DID YOU KNOW.................... that when electing a new pope, the College of Cardinals are locked into the Sistine Chapel in Rome, which is called the conclave. At times, they were slow in their efforts to find a successor. To counter their unproductive sessions, their food and especially wine were then rationed, helping to speed up the process.

WINE TRIVIA..................... Were women ever legally forbidden to drink wine? During the early Roman period, women were not allowed to drink wine at all. A husband who found his wife drinking was at liberty to kill her. Divorce was also an option, which was last recorded in Rome in 194 B.C. That may be taking it a bit far, but you may want to watch which old bottle you grab from the cellar ladies.

Syrah -  Shiraz!    Tomato -  Tomahto!

There is absolutely no difference. (Syrah is the grape, Shiraz is the Aussie slang for this varietal) The noble grape syrah is embraced worldwide, from California, to Australia, France, Chile, Italy, and all points in between. Hailed as the next big wine trend by everyone in the wine press, we'll let you decide as we sample specimens from the world over.
