Tasting Notes

2000 Pierin Barbera del Monferrato
From fruit to finish, this full body red is constructed like a fine symphony. The aroma of ripe fruit attacks the senses, giving way to flavors of dark cherry, blackberry, pomergranite, and licorice. Light earthiness, subtle oak and soft tannins lead you to a soft elegant finish. The perfect wine for a feast of roasted meats, the heartiest of cheeses, or a brick oven pizza. The Hills of Piemonte echo with the satisfying sounds of this well balanced beauty from Pierino Vellano.

2007 SHADY LANE COOP de BLANC VIGNOLES
When walking off the beaten wine path, unknown varietals can be like a venture to Oz. This spectacular effort will make it one smooth ride. Huge flavors of apple, peach, apricot and pineapple fruit roll smoothly across the palate, leaving you with one refreshing taste after another. It's hint of residual sugar makes it a perfect compliment to fish, cheese, or a tray of fruit and nuts.
Winemaker Adam Satchwell deserves a standing ovation for one of the best Vignoles I've had in many years. No need to follow a Yellow Brick Road, just stay on the path to Shady Lane, one of our finest properties in Northern Michigan.

2005 No. 99 Wayne Gretzky Estate Vidal Icewine
The Great One? Without a doubt, but we're not talking about the career of owner Wayne Gretzky here. It's all about the wine, this Vidal Icewine, which goes through some serious overtime in order to produce it's nectar. Intense flavors of apricot, honeysuckle, orange and pineapple leave a powerful impact on the senses, with layer after layer of explosive silkiness, so well balanced with a finish of refreshing acidity. This qualifies as my epitome of a great wine: when you can enjoy smelling its perfumed aroma just as much as you do sipping its imperial juice. Nothing short of an MVP effort from Canada's Niagra Peninsula.

2005 CHATEAU BOUCASSE VEILLES VIGNE
Comprised of regular and old vines, this 100% tannat varietal from the Madiran shows concentrated plum, exotic spice, soft leather, a touch of meatiness and subtle earth on the lengthy finish. It's lively on the nose, plush and juicy on the fruit, super sleek, elegant and muscular across the palate. This gem in the rough is one big wine yet quite affordable, one that can cellar for 5 to 10 years.

DID YOU KNOW..................that an Italian white wine called Est! Est! Est! first achieved it's name from a medieval tale. A bishop who was to journey through the Italian countryside had asked his scout to locate inns and taverns that served the best wines possible. When one was discovered, he marked the door with the word Est!, meaning "This is it". Happening upon one particular inn that served very outstanding wine, he etched the establishment's door with the words "Est! Est! Est!"

WINE TRIVIA..................What wine were most Americans drinking back in 1949? In 2009, Cabernet rules. In 1999, Merlot was the trend. In 1989, Chardonnay was on every table. In 1979, Lambrusco was the hot ticket. In 1949, Muscatel was the varietal of choice. Our palates are surely thankful that we have come a long way since.
