Tasting Notes

2006 Shafer One Point Five
This Cabernet truly defines the nectar that comes from the Stag's Leap District of Napa Valley. Soft and elegant as an actress walking the red carpet, the black cherry, red currant and plum fruit flow smoothly over the palate. The subtleness of milk chocolate and bouquet of violets adds to its overall balance of flavors. You don't need to be a fortune teller to predict just how good this young wine will be a few years down the road, just a savvy collector.

2005 Chateau Desmerail
A classified second growth from the Margaux region of France, this may be the finest Boudeaux from this spectacular vintage I have tasted so far. It's flavors so delicate, so expansive, a sweet haunting perfume nose that gives way to black currant, raspberry spice, and fresh violets. The tannins are spellbinding, melting deep into the senses, not overly earthy and biting as many others often display. At a price point of near $50, a fraction of the cost of many other notables, this may well be the one wine to cellar in remembering the '05 vintage.

2007 Darioush Viognier
With such a distinguished line up of quality wines in their portfolio, it's not often a white wine is one of the most sought after. If you've ever tasted this Viognier, you would certainly know why. It displays harmonious flavors of honeysuckle, white peaches and elegant citrus, finishing with vibrant nutmeg, black licorice, vanilla and a concentrated floral aroma. May be the one white wine, if deserted on a tropical island, I'd choose to be marooned with.

2007 Waterwheel Memsie
Whenever I serve this Auusie gem, it quickly raises a few eyebrows, and a few questions as to what had just been tasted. My answer is: something unique. A blend of Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Petit Verdot, it's unlike anything else you can compare it to. Which to me, is a good thing. Ruby in color, black currant and raspberry in flavor, rich in it's menagerie of complexity.

Want something different? Want something unique? In turn, you'll be wanting some
more.

DID YOU KNOW.................that the early Egyptians were very instrumental in the culture of wine. Around 4000BC, they were the first to use cork as a closure for wine. Around 1500BC, they were the first to make glass containers. In the time of King Tut's Egypt, around 1300BC, it was the commoners who drank beer while wine was reserved for the upper class.

WINE TRIVIA.................Which is the only grape named after a god? Though wine is reverently called "The Nectar of the Gods", the Italian grape varietal Sangiovese, the source of all great Chianti based wines, translates to "The Blood of Jove."
