2001 LE RICHE CABERNET SAUVIGNON..............I remember vividly enjoying the classic 1999 vintage of this fantastic wine alongside winemaker and proprietor Henri Le Riche at his home, which was the only 5 star Cabernet for that year in South Africa. The 2001vintage, now available in the United States, is another testimony and homage to great Cabernet south of the equator. Done in the French Bordeaux style, its richness and well rounded fruit can stand up to many at double and triple the price from anywhere in the world. Be one of the next to discover this dazzling selection while its limited production is available.
2004 FOUR GRACES PINOT NOIR.....Oregon Pinot at its finest. Bright red berries that slap the senses, with supple vanilla and coffee aromas, its earthy finish round out this supremely balanced bottling. Its character shines through like a plush red Burgundy though it has all the elegance you come to expect from the upper West Coast. This wine makes you salute to the good life.
2005 YALUMBA VIOGNIER..........A value power packed Viognier from Australia that has lots to offer. Star fruit, mango, nectarine and fig blend well with its butterscotch, hazelnut and floral backbone. Creamy on the palate with a mineral finish, there is a lot to like about a viognier at this price. A no nonsense type of wine that is sure to please.
2005 VINA BORGIA CAMPO DE BORJA.....Grenache from Spain is one of the hottest trends in the wine market. Pocketbook conscience consumers and those seeking alternatives to the norm are flocking to Borsao for values that are hard to beat. Full of raspberry and bright red berries, its plush and luscious concentrated flavors deliver a refreshing punch to palate. Why waste time and money experimenting with the unfamiliar, a jewel in the shell awaits your opening. |

| Did you know.......
that when Queen Victoria of England proclaimed "A bottle of hock keeps off the doc", she was playfully making reference to the medicinal powers associated with the white Rhine wine from the village of Hockheim in the Rheingau region of Germany. |
Wine Trivia.......
The famous dry red wine from Hungary is called Egri Bikaver. Back in the 16th Century, the native Magyars, defending the town fortress in the city of Eger, drank so much red wine, they stained their beards blood red. The invading Turks retreated in fear, believing they had attained their fierce fighting prowess from drinking the blood from bulls.
Hence the story of the famous Bulls Blood wine from Hungary. |
CELLAR TIP...............Millions of wine lovers across the globe have recently enjoyed the latest vintage of Beaujolais Nouveau. This popular quaff, a young wine from France released each November to celebrate the harvest, has just about ran its course, both in availability and flavorful drinking potential. To this day, I still have loyal customers looking for those last few remaining bottles to keep their palates happy until next November when "Le Beaujolais Est Arrive" once again.
In reality, there is no reason to shed a tear for the next 9 months. Excellent alternatives with the same flavors exist year round made in same region and produced from the same grape. The gamay vinifera, used exclusively in the making of Beaujolais wines, is expressed in even greater quality through communes in its northern region. These villages, also called crus, make wines that exhibit their own distinctive personalities. Because of their structure, acidity and presence of tannin, they are even worthy of a few years of aging, something the Nouveau style in quite incapable of achieving.
The lure of Beaujolais is expressed through its vivid fruit flavors; black cherry, black raspberry, strawberry and currant.
Add in its lovely floral character of rose, lilac and violet, then let its black pepper, vanilla and other spicey notes tantalize the tastebuds. Fermented for a brief period of between 5 to 10 months, its light tannins and full roundedness leave us with a wine able to enhance any meal and seduce the palate in the process.
You will find these wines designated with a vintage date, usually 2005, and labeled as the basic quality Beaujolais, a step up in quality Beaujolais-Villages, or the highest quality available Beaujolais Cru. The later mentioned Cru come from the 10 special villages that best exemplify quality from the vineyards, and their specific village name will be highlighted on the label. The Cru Beaujolais to look for are Brouilly, Cote de Brouilly, Regnie, Morgon, Chiroubles, Fleurie, Moulin-a-Vent, Chenas, Julienas, and Saint Amour.
Each Beaujolais Cru exhibit their own flavor nuance and potential for age ability. Where as Beaujolais Nouveau resembles fun in wine, Beaujolais Cru commands respect. Let us examine each commune and see which style may appeal to own personal preference.
BROUILLY: The lightest and fruitiest of the Cru Beaujolais, their appeal is appreciated by those first getting into wine. Drink within 2 years of vintage date.
COTE DE BROUILLY: With more concentrated fruit flavors than a standard Brouilly, their liveliness expresses a step up in quality. Drink within 3 years of vintage date.
REGNIE: One of my personal faves, with full fruit, bigger in body and depth or character, a lovely food wine. Drink within 3 to 4 years of vintage date.
MORGON: The Cadillac of Crus, huge jammy grape flavors, balanced spice and floral, deep in color with rich earthy nuances. Drink young or cellar 6 or 8 years.
CHIROUBLES: The prissiest of the Beaujolais Cru, light and delicate, expressing more floral than fruit characteristics. Drink within 4 years of vintage date.
FLEURIE: Elegant in flavor, it expresses both fruit and floral notes. Silky smooth with medium body, it's the Belle of the Ball. Drink within 4 years of vintage date.
MOULIN-A-VENT: The Cru with the most age potential, its flavors rich and powerful. The Bordeaux or Burgundy of its region, drink it young or let it age for 10 years or more.
CHENAS: The hardest to find of the Cru, its richness worth the effort. Floral and stylish, the fruit hearty and plush. Drink within 3 years of vintage date.
JULIENAS: Power with grace, one of the richest in flavor, fullest in body, and spiciest of the Cru. Great nose, elegant in style, and named after Julius Caesar. Drink within 4 years of vintage date.
SAINT AMOUR: Fresh and polished, spicy with distinctive fruit characters. Enjoyed for its uniqueness among the other Cru. Drink within 2 years of vintage date.
As mentioned, these wines are very food friendly. With their fruit driven style and light complexity, they pair well with meat, fish or fowl, which includes nearly all international type cuisines. A traditional dessert of peaches, red currants and chilled Beaujolais is among one of the regions specialties.
It should be noted that wines from California that were long designated Napa Gamay and Gamay Beaujolais, which in reality were made using the valdiguie grape, had absolutely nothing in common with the French grape gamay. In cooperation with French laws from the region, United States legislation takes effect this year that will see the use of these particular terms become extinct from California wine practices and labeling.
Sales of the Beaujolais Cru wines has risen sharply in recent years. Judging by the ever increasing number of selections here at Champane's Wine Cellars and the number of customers interested these gamay gems, we hope to make Beaujolais style wines not only a celebration during our November gathering, but rather a year round experience of great wines from the Beaujolais region. | |
