The Acalanes Union High School District fiscal services staff has completed the First Interim Report, which must be filed with the Contra Costa County Office of Education by December 15, 2009. In order to meet the district's legal obligations, the First Interim Report includes $2.6 million in reductions for the 2010-2011 school year. This filing assumes parent club and foundation funding will remain stable, includes no additional spending for personnel and materials, and does not account for possible mid-year state budget cuts.
With the submission of this report, the district must include a plan for achieving budget cuts. In addition to the $2.6 million cut for 2010-2011, an additional $2.6 million in budget reductions will be necessary in 2011-2012. The bulk of these budget reductions require personnel releases.
Just in 2010-2011, district staff is projecting the elimination of 16 teaching positions, 9 non-classroom teaching positions, and 6 support staff positions. Based on the reduction or elimination of programs and facilities, layoffs may impact staff with over a decade of service to the district.
During the week of January 18, a series of public information sessions will be held at various locations and times (January 19-21). This schedule will be announced next week. Recent updates, fiscal bulletins, and notices of pending legal issues are available at the district website under
Budget and Negotiations Updates. The Acalanes Union High School District must meet the challenges of these extraordinary economic times. Insolvency is not an option. The district must make many difficult decisions for the long-term welfare of the educational community.
