Seven Healthy Habits of a Successful Athletes

The most-read WINForum blog post in May described the seven healthy habits of a successful athlete. What follows are those tips that you can pass along to your athletes to help them achieve their goals!

1.  Eat Healthy Meals and Snacks Every Day

Mini-meals all day long provide energy, build muscle and decrease fat. Always have a nutrient rich breakfast (fruit, whole grains, lean protein and low fat or fat free dairy), a mid-day meal and dinner. Healthy snacks in between are good, too.

 2. Don't Skip Meals

Managing weight doesn't mean skipping meals. Eating regularly provides the energy athletes need to fuel their body.

 3. Follow a Post Workout Routine

Remember the three Rs for Recovery

  • REHYDRATE
  • REPAIR to build muscle tissue and
  • REPLENISH glycogen stores.

Research confirms how low fat chocolate milk can rehydrate with the right type of protein to build and repair muscles with a mix of calcium, potassium and vitamin D that supports bone health.

4. Always Ask Questions

Successful athletes should want to get information they can rely on about nutrition, supplements and training. Getting new information and questioning approaches that people bring to them is important.

 5. Don't Party Excessively or Get Caught up in That Lifestyle

Successful athletes 'just say no' to bad behaviors because they should know what healthy habits are and how to stick to them.

 6. Train Year Round

Nutrition and training go together. Successful athletes don't stop eating well and training during the off season because playing catch-up during the season rarely allows them to reach their peak performance when they need it most.

7. Know Your Body

Everyone is different so an athlete should consider their own past weight, diet and supplement intake, and how their body has responded to certain ways of eating or training. Successful athletes should know what is true about how their body performs and build a healthy eating plan from there.
