Coaches, Student Athletes Team Up
to Learn Nutrition Essentials for Performance

Winforum 2011

The Washington Interscholastic Nutrition Forum (www.winforum.org) conducted a three-hour nutrition essentials clinic at Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) headquarters on April 30. Having coaches and students attend generated more discussion and encouraged them to ‘team up’ to educate other team members about the value of eating a balanced diet of fruits, vegetables, grains and low-fat or fat-free dairy – connecting a healthy diet to personal achievement.

The WINForum clinic attracted 13 coaches and 12 student athletes, who heard WINForum coordinator Emily Edison review the WINForum Sports Nutrition Game Plan (download from www.winforum.org). Emily led discussions about nutrition basics such as snacks, meals, sports drinks, responsible weight loss, muscle gain, eating disorders and supplements. Participating coaches received three WIAA clock hour credits.

Student athletes learned about the planned WINForum Student Nutrition Advisory Panel (SNAP) to help answer questions and shape future WINForum nutrition clinics. The WINForum team will be reaching out to student athletes inviting them to join SNAP. Participating students will work with the WINForum team to discuss what is important to young athletes in terms of nutrition and health. If you have student athletes who would like to join SNAP, inquire at info@winforum.org.

The clinic was accredited for three WIAA coach's clock hour credits. Evaluations from the clinic were all positive and demonstrated the value of pairing coaches and student athletes for the session. The clinic was digitally recorded for streaming video on the WINForum website and YouTube.

Certificates of completion and photos were available to help promote healthy eating for all student athletes.
