Coaches Get WIAA Clock Hour Credits
for First Ever 3-Hour Nutrition Essentials Clinic
Emily Edison, Sports Dietitian for UW Athletics, presented the Sports Nutrition Game Plan to coaches and trainers. She discussed the importance of a well-balanced diet for peak performance.

About 30 coaches, trainers and nutritionists attended the Winter WINForum Clinic on November 20, 2010. Held at the UW Founders Club on the University of Washington campus, the Clinic was the first WINForum event that qualified for WIAA coaches’ “clock hours” credits.
Emily Edison, M.S., R.D., a UW Athletics Dietitian and coordinator of the Washington Interscholastic Nutrition Forum (www.winforum.org), explained the best ways to eat in order for athletes to stay lean, strong and energetic. Peak performance nutrition comes from eating foods that will give a body the energy it needs to get through practices and games. It is important for athletes to remember that FOOD = FUEL and that carbohydrates, protein and fat are the building blocks of a healthy diet.
Edison also spotlighted the WINForum Sports Nutrition Game Plan – a document that provides recommendations from sports nutrition and medical experts focusing on 11 topics that typically challenge student athletes. Visit the WINForum website (www.winforum.org) to download a summary of Emily’s ‘Nutrition Essentials for Peak Performance’ PowerPoint presentation; and download the WINForum Sports Nutrition Game Plan to share with your athletes.
Coaches are a very influential part of a student athlete’s life. It’s important to empower athletes with good information about nutrition and healthy habits. Remember to emphasize performance rather than appearance. Looking a certain way doesn’t make someone a better athlete - a healthy lifestyle does!
