WINForum – Wrong Foods = Low Energy Availability
‘Hot Topics In Sports Nutrition’ Coaches School 2010

WINForum WIAA Coaches School About 285 coaches/trainers attended two clinics of the Washington Interscholastic Nutrition Forum during the 2010 WIAA Coaches School at the Yakima Convention Center on July 30.

Emily Edison, M.S., R.D., a UW Athletics Dietitian, and coordinator of the Washington Interscholastic Nutrition Forum (www.winforum.org) explained how low energy availability among student athletes comes unintentionally from lack of accurate information about caloric needs; or intentionally via weight loss that could involve disordered eating. Psychopathological weight loss is associated with an eating disorder.

Edison also spotlighted the WINForum Sports Nutrition Game Plan – a document that provides recommendations from sports nutrition and medical experts focusing on 11 topics that typically challenge student athletes. Visit the WINForum website (www.winforum.org) to download a summary of Emily’s “Hot Topics In Sports Nutrition’ Coaches School presentation; and download the WINForum Sports Nutrition Game Plan to share with your athletes.

Sports Nutrition Game Plan
Student athletes need to know that food is fuel and they can’t train without it; but also that focusing on the scale is at best a distraction and at worst a disease.

Why Athletes Need to Eat in the Morning
- Eating after an 8+ hour fast (“Break the Fast”) is vital to preserving muscle tissue and carbohydrate stores.

Pre-Exercise Nutrition
- Eat a MEAL 3-4 hours before practice or competition.
- Eat a snack (200 calories of carbs) 1 hour before practice or competition.
- Drink plenty of fluid.
