May 2012
Greetings!

I fear we are beginning to sound like a broken record up here at Texas Discovery Gardens, but May is upon us and we are still in our busy season.  We are in great need of volunteers to assist us almost every weekday this month as EarthKeeper's Classroom Assistants and Butterfly House Docents, sharing basic butterfly knowledge with the thousands of school children that will walk through our doors.  We are also busy every weekend this month with Plant Sale, Mother's Day Concerts, CityArts at Fair Park Festival and Memorial Day weekend.  In short, if there is any day of the week you are available, we could certainly use your time and help.  If you would like to schedule some time to volunteer this month, please contact Marisa Hettinger and plan to come on in for some fun with butterflies and plants!

Plant Sale Volunteers
Friday, May 11th; 3.30PM-7.30PM
Saturday, May 12th; 9.30AM-2.30PM

Join us as a volunteer for our semi-annual Plant Sale at Texas Discovery Gardens.  Need some extra motivation?  Sign up to volunteer and you can join us on Wednesday, April 9th from 6-7.30PM for our Volunteer Orientation and opportunity to preshop our plant sale BEFORE members or the public.

Our horticulture staff and volunteers have labored to propagate each of these native butterfly host and nectar plants from seed and cutting.  This annual fundraiser helps us directly support our mission to teach effective ways to restore, conserve and preserve nature in an urban setting with a focus on gardening organically and sustainably.  Please contact our Volunteer Manager, Marisa Hettinger, to sign up for a volunteer shift.

Almost EVERY Weekday Morning/Early Afternoon In May

It's true.  Pick a week day morning, almost any week day morning in May, and TDG will be hosting hundreds of students visiting our gardens and butterfly house.  We could use extra assistance in the Butterfly House and in our classrooms during these times as we provide our programming and educate thousands of school children on butterflies, gardening, terrariums, math, and more!  If you are available to help out, please let us know.  Volunteers can select a day of the week to regularly volunteer or can schedule a day to come in as they are available.

CityArts, an annual arts festival, is hosted once again this year on the Fair Park grounds.  We are in need of extra hands to assist with the increased crowds we anticipate receiving through the day.  If you are available to volunteer for any of the shifts listed above, please contact our Volunteer Manager Marisa Hettinger.

Help Us Meet Our Daily Volunteer Needs!
Volunteers needed 7 days a week
Two shifts available daily: 10AM-2PM and 1PM-5PM

Did you know that on a regular day at Texas Discovery Gardens, we are in need of 4 volunteers?  That means on a slow week without events or children's programming on the schedule, we are in need of 28 Butterfly House volunteers.  If you are worried about having something to do on a slow day, our staff has been carefully outlining projects that our docents can assist with when they're not in the BF House.  Help us create a volunteer BF Handbook, sharpen pencils for classes, make bulletin boards to share info with our volunteers, assist with data entry and mass mailings, and so much more!  Do you have time to regularly volunteer in our butterfly house educating our visitors?  If so, please contact Volunteer Manager Marisa Hettinger.
