Historical Review of the Month: Botanical Illustrations Combine Science, Art
 | | Paintings on display at our current exhibition. |
A mixture of aesthetics and science, botanical illustrations showcase the form and color of a particular plant, often including the seeds, fruit, and roots. They got their start before the introduction of plant taxonomy, or the science of classifying plants. Knowledge was passed down through the use of illustrations, which often accompanied text. In 1753, with Carl Linnaeus' introduction of the classification system we know today, illustrations became even more important. The influx of books on the subject required accurate botanical prints. Botanical illustrations continue to thrive today, a blend of science and art. You might think that photography rendered them obsolete. However, illustrators can merge differences in individual plants to create an ideal image. Think about popular bird, butterfly or plant guides. It's easy to match a generalized drawing to the live individual you see in front of you. Illustrations can also include several viewpoints of a plant at once as well as characteristics that will be visible during varying seasons. Before the weather gets too hot, try your hand at a nature journal, recording what you see and sketching leaves, flowers and seeds. You'll be following a long line of esteemed artists and botanists who set out to record the natural world around them. See illustrations up close by local artists Cynthia Padilla and Julio Suarez. Our current exhibition, Earth, Petal, Wing: a Collection of Scientific Illustrations and Botanical Paintings, runs through April 24. |
Texas Discovery Gardens is named the April Charity of the Month for
During the entire month of April, One Meaning will be donating 10% of all sales of gifts, jewelery and accessories to Texas Discovery Gardens.
The New York-based boutique was started by two women, Karen and Ingrid, who wanted to share an inspirational message with others in the code 813. It translates to "I Love You," with 8 letters, 3 words & 1 meaning.
The numbers form a beautiful butterfly and dragonfly shape and have been made into stunning silver, gold and steel jewelry and fun accessories.
Read Karen's and Ingrid's touching story of how they began 'One Meaning' here.
We encourage you to check out their website and perhaps buy a necklace or bracelet for someone you love. The proceeds donated to Texas Discovery Gardens at the end of the month will help us further our mission to teach effective ways to restore, conserve and preserve nature in the urban environment, with a focus on gardening organically and sustainably.
Please pass this offer along to friends and family!

Donor Spotlight
A reminder about the annual tear-pad promtion with Central Market:
Texas Discovery Gardens is pleased to announce that H-E-B has selected EarthShare of Texas to be the beneficiary of its in-store coupon promotion for April, in recognition of Earth Day. This means that customers can tear off and add check-out coupons worth $1, $3, or $5 to their total bill to support environmental work in the Central Texas, Houston, Gulf Coast, Rio Grande Valley and Border, plus North Texas Central Markets.
Look for the EarthShare of Texas display and tear-off coupons at the check-out stands in more than 200 H-E-B and Central Market stores in most areas of Texas in late March through April. And help support EarthShare of Texas and the Texas environment!
Also, EarthShare announces another way to donate:
Want to help Texas Discovery Gardens and offset your carbon footprint at the same time? Reliant Energy and EarthShare of Texas have launched The Reliant EcoShare (SM), a program that allows Reliant customers to support EarthShare of Texas and its participating organizations and help reduce the customers' carbon footprints through the purchase of carbon offsets.
The Reliant EcoShare (SM) program gives customers the option of two pricing levels:
- For a flat monthly cost of $3.95, a $1 donation is made each month to EarthShare of Texas, and 500 pounds of carbon offsets are purchased.
- Or for a flat monthly cost of $5.95, a $2 donation is made each month to EarthShare of Texas, and 1,000 pounds of carbon offsets are purchased.
As one of EarthShare of Texas' participating organizations, a portion of the Reliant donation is shared with Texas Discovery Gardens.
