Earth, Petal, Wing / Tierra, Pétalo, Ala : A Collection of Scientific Illustrations and Botanical Paintings
Our latest art exhibit opens Friday, Jan. 28, 2011 and celebrates nature in watercolor, prints and acrylic. Earth, Petal, Wing showcases the interpretation of natural subject matter by Cynthia Padilla and Julio Suarez, Texas-based artists who share a passion for nature and the natural sciences and an appreciation for the fragility and simple beauty found in nature.
Using varied tools, Padilla and Suarez present paintings, drawings and prints based on direct observation of natural science subjects. These include seashells, flowers, feathers and insects taken from nature journals, notebook sketches, plein air renderings and personal photography. The works are naturalistic, realistic and stylized and demonstrate the versatility of the creativity of the two artists and their respective approaches to self-expression.
Cynthia Padilla is an international botanical artist and natural science illustrator. Julio Suarez is a visual artist and art educator with an interest in botany and the natural sciences. The exhibition is curated by Janet Reynolds.
Exhibit runs: Jan. 28, 2011 through April 24, 2011. Texas Discovery Gardens admission applies.
Opening reception:
Jan. 28, 2011, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Admission to Texas Discovery Gardens is free for the reception.

 Donor Spotlight
Thanks to Preservation Tree Services for mulching donated Christmas trees for use in our gardens. Each year, we receive enough mulch to cover several of our individual gardens, keeping trees out of the landfill and helping us to garden organically!
We also want to recognize the Swiss Avenue Historic District for working together with Preservation Tree to add to the drive! These families have made it a tradition to donate their trees to the gardens during the drive each year and broke their record with more than 20 trees!
