Standing Committees

Joint Morning Session

Topic:
Wage Gaps and Pay Equity in Ontario

Speaker:
Emanuela Heyninck,
Commissioner of Ontario's Pay Equity Commission

The Status of Women & Human Rights Standing Committee topic for the March 17 morning session is pay equity, which is taken to mean equal pay for work of equal value. The speaker, Emanuela Heyninck, is currently serving her second term as the Commissioner of the Pay Equity Commission for Ontario, an independent agency of the Ministry of Labour. The Commission administers and enforces the Ontario Pay Equity Act. Please visit the Commission's website at http://www.payequity.gov.on.ca/en/index.php

Ms. Heyninck's presentation will focus on the title Wage Gaps and Pay Equity: Why Women Should be Concerned, and she will also share her views on women's equality, both socially and politically.

Since 2010, Ms. Heyninck has also served as a part-time adjudicator for the Health Professions and Health Services Appeal and Review Boards. Before her appointment she practiced civil, family and administrative law in London, Ontario for 25 years.

Education Committee
In the afternoon, the education committee will review the education recommendations contained in the Drummond Report.  CFUW and CFUW OC policy, along with information from other stakeholders, will be used as a filter to identify areas of agreement and concern.
Legislation Committee

The topic for the afternoon session will be When Communications Go Awry: The Impact of Intangible Culture on Cross-Cultural Interactions

What happens when people of completely different cultural worldviews interact? What happens when invisible, intangible components come into play?

What is the concept of individualism in Western culture? In aboriginal culture?  In different times and places? What are the intersection points between worldviews?

Is communication even possible?

These are the questions that Dr. Cheryl Gaver poses as she examines the intersection between the individual and the community that emerges when so-called "individualist" and "non-individualist" cultures interact.

Dr. Gaver received her Ph.D. in Religious Studies from the University of Ottawa. She is also a Research Associate with the Intercultural Research and Training Group at the same university. Her 2010 doctoral thesis explores the relationship between Aboriginal and EuroCanadian Anglicans in the Yukon and Northwest Territories in the post-residential school era.

Dr. Gaver holds a B.A in French Literature, a Masters of Divinity from Knox College, University of Toronto and a certificate in Jewish-Christian relations from Cambridge.   Dr. Gaver has worked as Presbyterian Minister, an administrator with Atomic Energy of Canada Limited, and as a professor in a number of areas, including global issues, religious studies, and aboriginal cultures.

For the past few years, Dr. Gaver has been working with ethnic minorities in China to find ways that preserve and strengthen cultural identities and, at the same time, create opportunities for modernization and development.

Her particular interest is in the intersection points between cultures: how shared spaces are negotiated in ways that respect differences, acknowledge shared and often conflictual histories, and develop new, more positive models of interaction for the future.

Status of Women &
Human Rights Committee

In the afternoon, the Status of Women & Human Rights Committee will take the opportunity to continue the discussion about pay equity, and to consider the question What role could CFUW Ontario Council play in addressing the gender wage gap?

Perth & District has a Winner with their HOUSE TOUR EVENT

Last December, Ontario's Perth & District Club held their Sixth Annual Heritage Perth Christmas House Tour. Over the years the tour has changed, improved and generated well over $50,000.00 to fund local education initiatives. These initiatives include education awards to selected needy women and young girls for their post-secondary education. Donations are also made to area libraries and school literacy programs.

In the past two years the event has been self-funding, allowing for all the proceeds to be 'given away'. This has been accomplished through the development of a brochure advertising program and through sponsors who provide donations and/or services to support the tour's costs. The Tour is well supported by the local community that has come to expect the tour on the first weekend in December-also the time for the annual Santa Claus parade. Since about one third of our ticket holders are from out-of-town, area businesses are very supportive.

Each of the homes is decorated for the holidays by area florists. In addition, we feature something special in each home-primarily musicians. In one home we offer gingerbread cookies provided by a local bakery, along with apple cider. Our local award-winning Town Crier and his wife also make an appearance to welcome visitors to the tour's houses.
