Adaptability

"Adaptability - This is the most essential quality... for the progress of the world is continually opening new careers, and at the same time closing or revolutionizing the traditional types of employment."

-Dr. Maria Montessori

Adaptability Today

At no time in history has Dr. Maria Montessori's statement regarding adaptability (above) been more true than it is today. The job market is changing every single day.

Technology continues to be "revolutionized," changing the types of careers that are available and needed throughout the world. The careers that are seen today are not the same ones that will be available to the adults of the future - our children.

Our goal as a Montessori school is to build a foundation of knowledge that allows the child to adapt to any situation. They develop a love of learning and they are not simply learning by wrote memorization of facts, but instead learning how to learn so that they can continue learning for a lifetime in this ever-changing world.
Greetings!

Happy Valentine's Day! It is February, a time for Valentine's Day parties and parent/teacher conferences. Read below for more information on both of these events. Although we haven't had much snow this year, I have, again, included information regarding snow days. I also wanted to give you a sneak peek into March events, so please be sure to check the upcoming events.

Keep checking Facebook, Twitter, and the app (iPhone or Android) for updates, stories about what's happening in each classroom, and pictures of the children at work.

Valentine's Day
Our preschool, kindergarten, and elementary students will all be participating in a Valentine's Day party on Tuesday, February 14, 2012. One portion of the party involves exchanging Valentine cards. Please be sure that you have read the instructions that were sent home regarding these cards and follow them carefully.

Another aspect of the party is eating a very special snack. The items included in the snack are all provided by parents. If you have not had a chance to sign up to bring something and would like to, please see a teacher right away.

The children will be bringing their Valentine cards home to open them with you. This can be a very special time to spend together. Have fun and have a Happy Valentine's Day!
Parent/Teacher Conferences
lesson table

February brings the time for formal parent/teacher conferences school-wide. Please make sure that you have signed up with your child's teacher to ensure that you get a time that is convenient for you.

We will be holding conferences during the days that we have closed school for that purpose ( Friday, February 17th and Monday, February 20th) and a few other days throughout the month. The dates and times that are available vary from classroom to classroom, and we try to accommodate your schedule as best as we can.

This is the only formal parent/teacher conference that we schedule for the year; however, this is not your only opportunity to communicate with your chid's teachers. If there is ever a time that you would like to schedule a meeting, please feel free to leave a note and we will set up a time to meet with you. Also, please remember that you are free to observe any classroom whenever the observation chair is empty. You may drop in at your convenience or schedule an observation in advance.

VIP Nights
parent and childWe hosted two evenings of which your children were the "Very Important People" for the night. On Thursday, January 26, or Tuesday, January 31 from 6:30 - 7:30PM, the children brought their parents to school to watch them work.

Both nights were a huge success in every classroom throughout the school. We had a wonderful turnout, and everyone seemed to have great time.

We believe that we accomplished our goal of letting the children know how very important they truly are to the adults in their lives. We hope you enjoyed your evening with your child are much as we did!
Snow Days

Although we may get a lot of snow, we rarely (if ever) close for the weather because we do not use busses to transport our children. Local schools must close if their busses are unable to safely pick up the children. It is up to you to decide, in inclement weather conditions, whether or not you feel it is safe enough to drive to school. Even if many, or most, of our children are not in attendance, we will still be open to care for the children whose parents must go to work.

In the event of an emergency which causes us to close school and childcare, such as loss of electricity or flooding, you will be notified as soon as possible by way of a phone call from your child's teacher. If we know in advance of a school day's start that we will have to close, you will also find our closing information on WDIV Channel 4 on television.

We have posted many pictures on Facebook, twitter, and our app. You may want to look at the pictures, even if they are not of your child's classroom, to see what else is going on in the school or what you have to look forward to for your child as he/she changes programs. As always, keep your "likes," comments, stories, and suggestions coming!

Again, please forward this newsletter or our information to anyone who may be interested in Montessori Stepping Stones.

Sincerely,
