The Rich Environment

| | "The environment must be rich in motives which lend interest to activity and invite the child to conduct his own experiences."
-Dr. Maria Montessori

"What IS the absorbent mind?"
| | |
Absorbent Mind - The first plane of development (birth through six years old) where the child has the capability to absorb large amounts of information about their environment through their senses. During this plane of development children acquire language, develop motor and cognitive skills, copy the social skills of adults, and learn expectations of how the world will treat them.

Greetings!
This month brings cultural studies to life for students and parent volunteers at the International Festival! Watch for information about how to volunteer and instructions regarding your child's costume. Our newsletters have been quite successful. We hope you have been enjoying the information and pictures! Thank you for downloading our app, too. Did you know that we were the second Montessori school in the world to have an app? We missed first by a matter of days, and we remain one of only three! If you have not yet downloaded it, just follow one of these links: Apple App Store or Android Market |
 | New Website | |
I have been working hard, alongside Rachel Reynolds of Ambitious Marketing Solutions, on the construction of our NEW website. It is finally up and running, and can be accessed at www.montsteppingstones.com. For user convenience, the web address and email addresses have not changed. There are many new features. including a parent tab, that should be interesting to our current families.
- You may now schedule an observation of your child's classroom by selecting "schedule a tour or observation" under the "about" tab.
- The calendar is easily accessible and can be found in several places - under the "parents" tab as well as the "about" tab, in the footer section, and in the calendar module on the bottom right side of the homepage.
- Parents will find the Parent Handbook, current and past newsletters, and information regarding fundraisers and Wells of Love under the "parents" tab.
- Extensive information about each of our programs can be found by selecting them under the "programs" tab.
- Access our Facebook page, follow us on twitter, or download our app by clicking on the appropriate link toward the bottom of each page.
- Learn more about Montessori philosophy, truths and myths, optimal learning conditions, famous alumni, and other resources under the "montessori" tab.
We will continue to improve the website, adding up-to-date information pertaining to specific classrooms and more, during phase two of the construction. |
 | International Festival | The International Festival will be held on October 31, 2011 from 8:30AM - 12:00PM. We are looking for parent volunteers to work craft tables, food tables, set up, and clean up. A letter regarding how to volunteer will be sent home soon. If you have any questions or do not receive your copy, please reply to this email or call the office at 586-465-4260.
Cameras and video cameras are allowed during this performance, as we are not having it professionally recorded. However, please remember that flash photography can be distracting to performers. You may also take photos during the party with your smartphone and send them to me via the app so that I can add them to the gallery.
Please also remember, the only people who will be eligible to attend the performance and festival that day are those who have volunteered in some capacity. We look forward to seeing you there!

 | Parent Education Night | Our October Parent Education Night will be held on Tuesday, October 25th from 6:30PM until 8:00PM. Childcare will be available.
The topic for this night is: Montessori Language. I will present some of the language lessons given to the children from infant/toddler through elementary, and explain the philosophy behind them. I will also briefly cover some of the conditions for optimal learning as discussed in Dr. Angeline Lillard's book, "Montessori: The Science Behind the Genius."
Coming to Parent Education Nights is the best way to gain insight into what your child is doing here at school. The children often have a difficult time telling their parents themselves, and they certainly cannot explain the methods and philosophy. I enjoy giving you a glimpse into you child's education and would be happy to answer any questions you may have! Join me on Tuesday, October 25th at 6:30PM. I look forward to seeing you there! |
