2012 Nebraska Action for Healthy Kids Summit, April 19th
The 2012 Nebraska Action for Healthy Kids (NE AFHK) Summit will be held on April 19th from 8:00 AM - 3:30 PM CST in Lincoln at the Center for People in Need (3901 N 27th St). This event will feature many excellent local and national speakers and cover exciting topics including raising active kids, what's new in school lunch, and sustainable wellness initiatives. Registration for the 2012 Weight of the Nation Conference in Washington, D.C., May 7-9 is now open. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will host the event which is designed to provide a forum to highlight the progress in the prevention and control of obesity through policy and environmental strategies. Spring Walk to School Day, April 25, is a statewide celebration of the many benefits of walking and biking. Communities everywhere are organizing special events to promote healthy lifestyles and encourage kids and families to get out and get moving. Safe Routes Nebraska is offering free professionally designed resources to help plan and promote activities, including an event planning guide, participation certificates, promotional posters, and more. Celebrate National Minority Health Month in April
April is National Minority Health Month. This year's theme, Health Equity Can't Wait. Act Now in Your CommUNITY!, is a call to action and unity for the regions, the state and local offices of minority health, the health departments and all the organizations and partners involved and invested in reducing health disparities.
April 2012 marks the first anniversary of the launch of the HHS Action Plan to Reduce Racial and Ethnic Health Disparities and the National Stakeholder Strategy for Achieving Health Equity.

Nebraska's Long Range Transportation Plan Available for Comment
The draft "Vision 2032," Nebraska's new long-range transportation plan, is available for public comment until May 11th here. Vision 2032 is a twenty year plan establishing goals, objectives, and strategies to address transportation challenges and opportunities throughout Nebraska. 2012 County Health Rankings Highlight Healthiest and Least Healthy Counties in Every State The University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation recently released the County Health Rankings, which assess the overall health of nearly every county in all 50 states based on key factors that influence health, such as education rates, income levels, and access to healthy foods and medical care, fast-food restaurant density, and levels of physical inactivity among residents. Action for Healthy Kids Grants Available
Action for Healthy Kids (AFHK) will award over 500 schools with grants, ranging from $1,000 to $5,000, for the 2012 -2013 school year through the School Grants for Healthy Kids program.
The grants are designed to help improve school nutrition and provide kids with greater access to healthy foods. Applications are due May 5.
Childhood Obesity Rapid Response Fund Accepting Applications
The Childhood Obesity Rapid Response Fund provides funding opportunities to ongoing state, local, and tribal public policy change efforts on childhood obesity. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and range from about $5,000 to $75,000. Click here to view the application. Applicants must be 501c3 organizations. CDC National Healthy Worksite Program Training and Technical Assistance Overview Webinar on April 20
The CDC National Healthy Worksite Program will provide employers and interested organizations nationwide access to worksite health training and resources beginning in summer 2012. They will be hosting webinar on Friday, April 20 from 1:30 PM -2:30 PM CST to learn about upcoming events and teleconferences that focus on practical, skill-building training for employers to implement comprehensive worksite health programs. Healthy Eating Research Call for Papers
Healthy Eating Research: Building Evidence to Prevent Childhood Obesity is a national program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) that supports research on environmental and policy strategies to promote healthy eating to prevent childhood obesity. This call for proposals is for two types of awards: Round 7 grants and RWJF New Connections grants awarded through the Healthy Eating Research program. These awards aim to provide decision and policy makers with evidence to reverse the childhood obesity epidemic by 2015. The deadline for concept papers is May 22. |

Teach a Kid to Fish: "Energizing the Movement to Prevent Childhood Obesity"
Teach a Kid to Fish is dedicated to preventing and reducing childhood obesity by empowering Lincoln children and families to eat healthy and be active. The organization envisions creating community solutions for children's health.
Teach a Kid to Fish developed a long term strategic plan to address the epidemic of childhood obesity with the community at large. It has seven working groups, each with its own set of action steps and priorities, working to carry out the strategic plan. The working groups are:
Teach a Kid to Fish has worked with the Nutrition and Activity for Health (NAFH) Program at the Department of Health and Human Services to develop and disseminate Foster Healthy Weight in Youth: Nebraska's Clinical Childhood Obesity Model to physicians across the state. The organization has also worked with the Nebraska Medical Association (NMA) and Partners N Health to develop the 2011 and 2012 Foster Healthy Weight in Youth Webinar Series, offering FREE CME for physicians, nurses, and dietitians, focusing on management of the comorbidities of obesity and community prevention strategies. Teach a Kid to Fish has partnered with NMA to start the Childhood Obesity Prevention Project, mobilizing physicians from across the state as champions in their practice, community and for statewide policy change.
Most recently, Teach a Kid to Fish partnered with the NAFH program to implement the Little Voices for Healthy Choices Nutrition and Physical Activity Self Assessment for Child Care (NAP SACC) pilot project in five child care centers in Lincoln.

Let's Move! Salad Bars to Schools
Any school, public or private, participating in the National School Lunch Program can apply for a start-up award to help pay for salad bar equipment. Interested schools can begin the process by completing an online application and creating their own individualized webpage at: www.saladbars2schools.org. The website offers details about the benefits of salad bars and resources to help increase fruit and vegetable consumption at schools.
Rethink your Drink Symposium April 25 in Chicago
The Illinois Public Health Institute is hosting a symposium that explores clinical approaches to reducing sugary beverage consumption and complementary policy and environmental changes. "Rethink your Drink: The Impact of Sugar-Loaded Beverages on the Obesity Epidemic & Clinical Environmental Strategies to Reduce Consumption" will be held April 25th from 11:30 AM - 5:00 PM CST at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. Registration closes on April 20.
Webinar on Student and Parent Advocacy for a Healthy School Food Environment April 17
"Taking On School Lunch: Students and Parents Build Power Fighting for a Healthy Food Environment" will be held Tuesday, April 17 from 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM CST. This webinar will highlight the work in Denver and Los Angeles to improve the healthiness of the entire school lunch environment, and how advocates there use this issue as a tool to mobilize and empower students and families.
Retail Food Environment Index Maps Now Available
Maps of the modified Retail Food Environement Index for 50 states and Washington, D.C. are now available. These maps can be used to help identify census tracts within states or communities that either lack access to healthy food retailers such as supermarkets or contain very high densities of fast food restaurants and convenience stores relative to the number of healthy food retailers.
"Growing Change: A Farm Bill Primer for Communities"
This recently release guide from Public Health Law and Policy describes the provisions related to nutrition and obesity prevention within the Farm Bill, and shows the link between the Farm Bill and obesity prevention efforts being implemented across the country.

Community Design and Policies for Free-Range Children: Creating Environments That Support Routine Physical Activity by Mark Fenton focuses on the need to "alter policies and the built environment to create settings that support increases in routine, not just exercise or leisure time, physical activity among children."

Best Fed Beginnings Recruitment Begins April 2
Recruitment began April 2 for Best Fed Beginnings, an initiative to help hospitals improve maternity care and increase the number of Baby-Friendly hospitals in the United States. This exciting project is for any hospital interested in working with national experts and leading hospitals to improve how they support mothers' infant feeding decisions. Certified Lactation Counselor Certification Training in Lincoln June 11-15 There will be Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC) certification trainings held in Lincoln June 11-15. The CLC certification from the Healthy Children Project is the premier national certification for the United States. The trainings will be located at the Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department training center, but all registrations and questions must be directed to the Center for Breastfeeding. Registration can be done by phone or by fax.
CDC's WHO Growth Chart Training Now Online
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has released an online training module, Using the World Health Organization (WHO) Growth Charts to Assess Growth with Children less than 2 Years of Age in the U.S., for health care providers and public health professionals who measure and assess growth of infants and young children. The training takes 45 minutes to complete and has seven sections that include Breastfeeding as the Norm for Infant Feeding. |
