Registration Now Open for 2012 Nebraska Action for Healthy Kids Summit, April 19th
The 2012 Nebraska Action for Healthy Kids (NE AFHK) Summit will be held on April 19th from 8:00 AM - 3:30 PM CST in Lincoln at the Center for People in Need (3901 N 27th St). This event will feature many excellent local and national speakers and cover exciting topics including raising active kids, what's new in school lunch, and sustainable wellness initiatives.

OneWorld Community Center in Omaha Awarded Participation in Healthy Weight Collaborative
Congratulations to OneWorld Community Center in Omaha, who was recently announced as one of 40 teams nationwide selected for participation in the second phase of the Healthy Weight Collaborative. The Collaborative is a project of the Collabrate for Healthy Weight initiative, a partnership between the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) and the National Initiative for Children's Healthcare Quality (NICHQ) supported by the Affordable Care Act Prevention and Public Health Fund.

ChildObesity180 Calling for Active School Initiatives Do you know a school that has an innovative program that gets students active? ChildObesity180 has launched the Active Schools Acceleration Project (ASAP) Innovation Competition. The competition is looking to identify, highlight, and award (up to $100,000) the most innovative and effective physical activity programs in elementary schools across the country. ASAP wants to learn about any approach that motivates quality physical activity at school and beyond. Top programs also will have an opportunity to develop and expand their initiative to other schools. The deadline for entries is April 2. Go to www.ActiveSchoolsASAP.org to learn more and enter.
Putting Business to Work for Health: Incentive Policies for the Private Sector Resource Now Available
A new resource from Public Health Law and Policy looks at how local government incentives to businesses--not regulations--can help improve community health. Putting Business to Work for Health: Incentive Policies for the Private Sector explains a variety of different types of incentives that promote access to healthy food and physical activity space, and outlines the steps involved in developing and carrying out these policies and programs.
Healthy Communities Sustainability Guide Now Available The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) Healthy Communities Program recently released a new sustainability guide for communities and coalitions. A Sustainability Guide for Healthy Communities is a synthesis of science- and practice-based evidence designed to help coalitions, public health professionals, and other community stakeholders develop, implement, and evaluate a successful sustainability plan. |

Safe Routes to Schools Nebraska
Safe Routes Nebraska is a federally funded program through the Department of Transportation which is committed to helping build safe routes to school, so kids can walk and bike more getting the exercise they need for happy, healthy lives.
Safe Routes enables and encourages children, including those with disabilities, to walk and bicycle to school; to make walking and bicycling to school safe and more appealing; and to facilitates the planning, development, and implementation of projects that will improve safety and reduce traffic, fuel consumption, and air pollution in the vicinity of schools.
Safe Routes Nebraska is currently funding 36 programs across Nebraska which includes constructing sidewalks, assessment of the safety around schools, encouragement and education programs and enforcement programs.

Nutrition in Schools Webinar March 21st
On Wednesday, March 21st, the Nebraska Medical Association's Childhood Obesity Prevention Project will host the third webinar in the "Foster Healthy Weight in Youth" series. "Nutrition in Schools" will be held from 12 PM - 1 PM CST, and will feature Dr. Robert Murray, a professor in the Department of Human Nutrition at the Ohio State University. Food First Releases Digital Resource Guide for Local Food Systems Practitioners
Cutting Through the Red Tape: A Resource Guide for Local Food Policy Practitioners and Organizers was produced by Food First to support advocates of local food systems. The free digital handbook provides access to the body of policies and tools that have successfully localized food systems at the levels of production, processing, distribution, consumption, and waste recovery.

CDC Launches Water in Schools Website
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently launched a new website with resources for schools on how to ensure that students have access to safe, free drinking water throughout the school day, along with other strategies that schools can use to create a school environment that supports health and learning.
Farm to Cafeteria: Supporting Student Health and Local Farm Systems Webinar March 22nd
The Healthy Schools Campaign will host a Farm to Cafeteria webinar on Thursday, March 22nd from 1 PM - 2 PM CST. The webinar will feature two stakeholders who participate in Chicago Public Schools' regional procurement program who will discuss the ways the program has shaped business and farming practices and discuss the barriers and lessons learned through the experience. Nutrition Assistance in Farmers Markets: Understanding Current Operations - Formative Research Findings
This exploratory descriptive study examined the characteristics of nine farmers markets to better understand the relationship between market operations and participation in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (formerly Food Stamps).
Study Finds that Nearly Half of Nation's Youngest Students Can Buy Junk Foods at School
A recent Robert Wood Johnson Foundation study found that nearly half of U.S. elementary school students could buy unhealthy snacks--such as cookies, cakes, and baked goods--outside of school meals during the 2009-2010 school year. Schools sold the snacks to students through vending machines, a la carte lines in the cafeteria, and school stores. |

Active Transportation in Rural Communities and Small Towns Report Released
A new report from the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy busts the myth that the only people walking or biking to work, school, or other destinations are those that live in major urban areas. In rural communities and small towns, residents bike and walk almost as much (and, in a few cases, more) as residents of cities and inner suburbs.

The Alliance for Biking & Walking just released its 2012 Benchmarking Report, which compiles data on biking and walking from all 50 states and 51 largest U.S. cities, including information on bicycling and walking levels, safety, public health indicators, economic impact, and more.

WorkWell to Host Return to Work Event March 21st
WorkWell will host "The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and Breastfeeding Mothers: What Employers Need to Know" from 11:30 AM - 1:00 PM CST at Ameritas (5900 O Street in Lincoln) on Wednesday, March 21. The event is designed to help employers better understand the FLSA changes and how to support breastfeeding employees. All employers, wellness coordinators, business managers, and human resource managers in Lancaster County are invited to attend the presentation. Certified Lactation Counselor Certification Training in Lincoln, March 19-23 and June 11-15
CLC certification from the Healthy Children Project is the premier national certification for the United States. The trainings will be located at the Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department training center, but all registrations and questions must be directed to the Center for Breastfeeding. Registration can be done by phone or by fax. |
