The Nebraska Medical Association

NMAThe Nebraska Medical Association (NMA) was founded in 1868, and represents nearly 3,000 active and retired physicians, residents and medical students from across the state of Nebraska. The mission of the NMA is to serve physician members by advocating for the medical profession, for patients and for the health of all Nebraskans. In recent years, the NMA has begun to focus additional efforts on public health. One of the biggest public health risks we face today is the obesity epidemic. The NMA is working to address this risk from a couple of different angles.

First is their Childhood Obesity Prevention Project (COPP). The mission of the COPP is to mobilize and engage physicians as advocates in their practice, communities and for statewide policies to prevent overweight and obesity in Nebraska children. To carry out its mission, the COPP provides education and clinical resources, community outreach, and policy advocacy. Resources continue to be made available to primary care physicians across the state with the dissemination of the Foster Healthy Weight in Youth Toolkit (Nebraska's Clinical Childhood Obesity Model).

Second is their Child Health and Obesity Policy Group. The NMA formed this group of child health advocates in May 2010 to collaborate on policy surrounding child health and obesity in Nebraska.

For more information on either effort, please visit the Nebraska Medical Association's Childhood Obesity Prevention Project website.
