Register Now for the Live Healthy Nebraska 100-Day Challenge
Live Healthy Nebraska is a wellness initiative that began 11 years ago as a team weight-loss and physical activity competition called N-Lighten Nebraska. The program, conducted by the Nebraska Sports Council, has developed into a series of team-based challenges, most notably the annual 100-Day Challenge, which runs January 23-May 1, 2012. In 2011, 8,283 Nebraskans participated in the 100-Day Challenge, losing 34,000 pounds, recording 25 million activity minutes, and achieving a collective BMI reduction of more than 14,000 points. Most participants enrolled through one of the 130 registered companies, who in turn received comprehensive data on the progress of their employees. Department of Roads Seeking Feedback
The Nebraska Department of Roads (NDOR) held a "Vision 2032: Mapping Nebraska's Future" Summit in August 2011 to outline the goals, objectives, and strategies for Nebraska's Long Range Transportation Plan Update. NDOR is still accepting stakeholder input on the draft and welcomes your comments. Comments may be shared on the Vision 2032 website.
UNL Extension to Offer "Creating Balance with Food and Fitness" Class
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension is accepting registrations for a "Creating Balance with Food and Fitness" class beginning February 7 and running through March 20, 2011. The class costs $20 and includes a wellness kit. For more information and to register, click here.
Fuel Up to Play 60 Campaign in Weston Featured
The Fuel Up to Play 60 campaign's success at St. John Nepomucene elementary school in Weston was the topic of an article featured in the Live Well Nebraska section of the Omaha World Herald early this month. Database on State and Local Physical Education and Nutrition Policies Now Available
The Classification of Laws Associated with School Students (C.L.A.S.S.) website analyzes state and local physical education and nutrition policies for schools. Users may use the C.L.A.S.S. data to compared policies from state to state and to assess policy progress in a state over time.
DHPE Now Accepting Applications for School Employee Wellness Awards Program
The Directors of Health Promotion and Education (DHPE) is now accepting applications for the 2011-2012 School Employee Wellness Awards Program to recognize schools and school districts that demosntrate commitment to the health of their employees by implementing school employee wellness programs. Awardees will receive special reginition for their efforts that include grants (Bronze $250, Silver $500, Gold $1,000) to be reinvested in their employee wellness programs. Applications must be submitted by February 15, 2012. |

The Nebraska Sports Council
The Nebraska Sports Council, which conducts the Live Healthy Challenge, the Cornhusker State Games and other amateur athletic events, is a 501 c 3 non-profit organization whose primary mission is to promote healthy and active lifestyles. In 2011, more than 25,000 Nebraskans participated in Nebraska Sports Council events and programs.
In the Live Healthy 100-Day Challenge, 8,283 Nebraskans lost more than 34,000 pounds and achieved an average of 28 minutes of non-work physical activity per day. Some 132 member companies achieved an estimated health-care cost savings of $2.9 million for employees in the Challenge.
The Cornhusker State Games featured competition in 65 sports for 11,511 athletes ranging in age from one to 87; the competitions, a statewide torch run and Olympic-style opening ceremonies generated an estimated $5 million impact on the state's economy.
Other NSC events, most notably the Mud Run, with 1,522 runners in 2011, and Pumpkin Run, with 2,988 runners, provided additional family-friendly fun.

The Panhandle Worksite Wellness Council, recently formed in 2010, is helping to guide area employers through an evidence-based worksite wellness model to build environmental supports and effective wellness policies addressing nutrition, physical activity and breastfeeding support.

High School Students Lacking on Fruit and Vegetable Consumption
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported this month that American high school students continue to eat less than the recommended daily amount of both fruits and vegetables. The report found that in 2010, about one in four high school students ate fruits less than once per day, and one in three ate vegetables less than once per day.
Annual Nebraska Nutrition and Food Update Addressing Food Sustainability
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences, Nebraska Dietetic Association, and UNL Extension will host their annual Nutrition and Food Upate on Thursday, February 2, 2012 at the in the Great Plains Room at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln East Campus Union. The event is titled "Sustainability: Eating for a Better Tomorrow," and will run from 8:15 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Continuing education credits and PDU's will be available from the ADA, LMNT, and AAFCS. The registration form and fee are due no later than January 24, 2012.

Let's Move in School Releases School Boards and Superintendent's Toolkit
The Let's Move in School campaign recently released its Superintendents and School Boards Toolkit, which is designed to assess the level of and offer strategic steps for physical education and physical activity provided in schools.
Safe Routes to School Releases 2011 Policy Report
The Safe Routes to School National Partnership, with support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, has released its 2011 Policy Report titled Safe Routes to School: Helping Communities Save Lives and Dollars. The report highlights the cost-savings benefits of Safe Routes programs in tough economic times.
Utah Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan Design Guide Now Available
Utah has released its Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan Design Guide, which was designed as a workbook allowing planners, engineers, elected officials, community coalitions, public health professsionals, and the general public to create an active tranportation plan as part of their comprehensive plan for their communities. |

Kaiser Permanente Commits to Support Breastfeeding as Key Strategy to Prevent Childhood Obesity
By January 1, 2013, all of Kaiser Permanente's 29 hospitals that offer maternal and child health services will be designated as Baby-Friendly, and/or participate in the Joint Commission's Perinatal Measures program, which requires participating hospitals to report their rates of exclusive breastfeeding at discharge. Campaign to "Ban the Bags" Launches in Rhode Island
In an effort to support breastfeeding mothers, women who give birth in Rhode Island hospitals will no longer be sent home with marketing bags of infant formula. The "Ban the Bags" campaign to end distribution of infant formula marketing bags statewide is the first of its kind in the nation. The campaign was launched with support from Rhode Island's First Lady, Lieutenant Governor, the Rhode Island Department of Health, and the Massachusetts Breastfeeding Coalition.
