LPS and Partnership for a Healthy Lincoln Collaborate on Student Weight Report
A report released this month as a result of a collaborative effort between Lincoln Public Schools (LPS) and medical partners in the community links children's weight to their success in the classroom.

DHHS Launches Defend Against Diabetes Campaign
In recognition of National Diabetes Awareness Month, the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is launching a campaign called Defend Against Diabetes to educate people on their risk of developing diabetes. The new website, www.DefendAgainstDiabetes.ne.gov, has a link to a diabetes risk assessment test, information on how to prevent or delay the onset of diabetes by doing things like being physically active and eating right, and even great giveaways like free cookbooks.
Also available from DHHS is a comprehensive list of diabetes materials available for ordering.

Foster Healthy Weight in Youth Webinar Series Available In 2011, the Nebraska Medical Association's Childhood Obesity Prevention Project, in collaboration with the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, Creighton University School of Medicine, and Teach a Kid to Fish, offered a series of six webinars focusing on the comorbidities of childhood obesity. Each webinar is archived and has one hour FREE continuing medical education credits (six hours total) for physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, and dietitians. The webinar series compliments the Foster Healthy Weight in Youth Toolkit, which is a model targeting primary care clinics with resources to assess, prevent, and treat childhood obesity. The toolkit and resources are available free of charge by submitting an order form.
Gretchen Swanson Center for Nutrition Launches Online Farm to School Toolkit
The Omaha-based Gretchen Swanson Center for Nutrition launched this month its online Farm to School toolkit. The toolkit was designed to help school food service personnel, food produces, distributors, and others who want to incorporate more local foods into their lunch menus through a Farm to School program to promote healthy eating.
Clif Bar Family Foundation Grants Available
The Clif Bar Family Foundation is offering small grants, averaging $8,000 to nonprofit organizations supporting the environment, healthy food systems, physical activity, and building strong communities. Applications must be received by February 15, 2012 for consideration during the first quarter of the year.

Nebraska Breastfeeding Coalition
The Coalition meets quarterly, and since its beginning in 2009 has developed a traveling breastfeeding display, educational and promotional materials, launched an active Facebook page, started a worksite wellness project to recognize breastfeeding-friendly businesses, participated in the Surgeon General's Call to Action to Support Breastfeeding photo project, and assisted in passing LB197, Nebraska's breastfeeding law!

Rudd Center Releases Sugary Drink ReportThe Yale Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity has released a Sugary Drink Facts Report, which highlights the significant exposure that youth have to marketing for sugary drinks, especially minority youth. Findings from the report reveal that, despite industry pledges to market fewer unhealthy beverages to children, there is more advertising for sugary drinks driven by several specific companies.

Farm to School Success Story: Oregon
Because of the efforts of Farm to School advocates in Orgeon, hundreds of thousands of public primary and secondary students have access to healthier, locally grown foods either through the school meal programs, school garden activities, school wellness policies, and/or other food-related educational activities. The Oregon Farm to School and School Garden Network Policy Workgroup worked with the Center for Training and Research Translation (Center TRT) to translate their successful policy approach for implemenation by others by providing resources used in their success.

First Annual Heartland Active Transportation Summit Resources Available Online
Resources from the First Annual Heartland Active Transportation Summit (HATS) are now available online. The Summit was held in Omaha Sept. 30-Oct. 1 and was organized by the Metropolitan Area Planning Agency (MAPA), the City of Omaha, and Live Well Omaha. The HATS website contains links to all presentations from the Summit.
CDC Report: School Health Guidelines to Promote Healthy Eating and Physical Activity
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced this month the release of new resources to accompany the recent publication of its School Health Guidelines to Promote Healthy Eating and Physical Activity. Resources include a PowerPoint Presentation, a Facilitator's Guide, Frequently Asked Questions, and a Reference List, all intended to help introduce the Guidelines to individuals at education and health agencies and other stakeholders invested in student wellness and promoting active living.

The National Institutes of Health Care Management Foundation is offering an archived version of the October 25 "The Business Case for Breastfeeding" webinar. The webinar explored the ways health plans and buisnesses can promote breastfeeding. The archive includes downloadable copies of the presentations featured on the webinar, as well as other resources.
CDC Announces New Effort to Boost Number of
Baby-Friendly Hospitals
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has awarded nearly $6 million over three years to the National Initative for Children's Healthcare Quality in an effort to help hospitals nationwide make quality improvements to maternity care and to support breastfeeding. The project is aimed at helping more hospitals move toward Baby-Friendly status. Only 5% of babies born in the U.S. are born in Baby-Friendly hospitals, according to the CDC's Breastfeeding Report Card, released in August. |
