Reston Station The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority is constructing a 23-mile extension of the Metrorail system, which will be operated by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority from East Falls Church to Washington Dulles International Airport. The extension will serve the Reston-Herndon area, the state's second largest employment concentration. It will provide a one-seat ride from Dulles International Airport to downtown Washington. "Northern Virginian of the Year"

|
Amanda Andere, who serves on the Reston Association Board of Directors, was selected by Northern Virginia Magazine as "Northern Virginian of the Year." Andere is the executive director of FACETS, a non-profit organization that provides emergency shelter, food and medical needs, as well as other services for those suffering from the effects of poverty.
Andere's leadership in the organization, as well as her volunteer work with other community groups, contributed to her being a recipient of the 2012 award. Click here to read more.

Lake Thoreau Treated Lake Thoreau has been experiencing dramatic growth of aquatic plants including Eurasian Water Milfoil, Yellow Floating Heart (both non-native invasive plants) and Floating Leaved Pondweed.
On Thursday, June 21, Reston Association contracted with Aquatic Environmental Consultants, Inc. (AEC) to treat the lake along the shoreline and other impacted areas. AEC applied three different herbicides to target the different plants over the course of one day. Lake Thoreau is open and safe for lake activities beginning today, June 22. Discover the colorful and diverse lives of Reston's "flying flowers." The butterfly class will focus on the basic identification and life cycles of our local butterflies through a combination of field guides, handouts and a Power Point presentation. Then, join staff and volunteers for the annual Butterfly Count through Reston's natural areas. Meet fellow butterfly lovers, learn tips on identification and have fun while helping to collect important information.

Learn about the fast, colorful and fascinating lives of Reston's "flying dragons." In the class, guest naturalist, Kevin Munroe, of the Fairfax County Park Authority, will focus on basic identification, natural history and conservation of our local dragonflies. Then, join the annual Dragonfly Count through Reston's natural areas. Meet local dragonfly experts, learn tips on identification and have fun while helping to obtain important information on our fast-flying friends.

RA's volunteer program consists of members in our community working in a variety of capacities. Volunteers are RA's strongest line of communication with the community. Each year a diverse group of RA members donate thousands of hours to the association. Through their dedication, we are able to provide a wide range of high-quality programs, services and events that make Reston a great place to Live, Work, Play and Get Involved. |

Weed Warriors Project
Native trees, ferns and wildflowers are under attack by invasive exotic plants like English Ivy, Japanese Honeysuckle and Bamboo. That is why we need warriors like you to join us in rescuing Reston's beautiful parkland from these aggressive plants.
Please spend a couple hours in our parkland protecting our forests every fourth Saturday of each month as we help restore Reston's forests to their natural state.
All projects: 10 a.m.-Noon.
Please wear long sleeves and long pants if you are allergic to poison ivy. RA will provide tools, gloves, snacks and water.

Quartermaster Woods RestorationSaturday, July 28
Join Weed Warriors and remove invasive exotic shrubs like Burning Bush and Bush Honeysuckle from the natural area. These shrubs are a threat to biodiversity and are linked to the decrease in song bird populations. The natural area surrounding the Quartermaster Soccer Field needs your help.
Please park along Glade Drive or Quartermaster Lane and meet on the Quartermaster Soccer Field. Look for the RA truck. There is poison ivy at this site.
