Reston Station The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority is constructing a 23-mile extension of the Metrorail system, which will be operated by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority from East Falls Church to Washington Dulles International Airport. The extension will serve the Reston-Herndon area, the state's second largest employment concentration. It will provide a one-seat ride from Dulles International Airport to downtown Washington. New Year's Closings
Reston Association facilities, including RA headquarters, the Central Services Facility and Nature House, will be closed at 3 p.m. today as well as Monday, Jan. 2. Nature House will also be closed on Sunday, Jan. 1, but open on Saturday, Dec. 31.

Tracking Snow Trucks
The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will introduce a website this winter that will allow the public to monitor snow-removal truck locations within six-minute intervals. This tool will be available when trucks are plowing residential streets.
VDOT will be developing a fact sheet in the coming weeks to address specific questions about the snow-removal process. For additional information, please visit http://www.virginiadot.org or contact the Hunter Mill District office.
Reston Association has requested that VDOT restrain from dumping snow on RA trails, sidewalks and bus stops.

New Year's 5k Run
Sunday, Jan. 1
10 a.m. start.
Reston Town Center. Potomac River Running will kick off to the New Year with a fast 5k loop around the Reston Town Center and local roads. Cash awards, food and prizes follow the race. Registration and information available at potomacriverrunning.com or call 703-689-0999.

Winter Bird Count Saturday, Jan. 7, 2012

Join us for a half-day annual bird count throughout Reston's natural areas. Meet local bird experts, learn tips on identification and have fun while helping obtain important information about our feathered friends. Lifeguard Update Class
Registration begins Jan. 9, online at www.reston.org or in person at the RA Member Services desk, 12001 Sunrise Valley Drive.
The American Red Cross is releasing a new lifeguard training program in January and all previously certified lifeguards will have to complete an update before working in 2012.
After registering, you will receive an e-mail asking you to select one "dry" and one "wet" day in order to complete the training. All returning staff must complete both the dry and wet days in order to be fully certified. For questions about the certification classes, please contact Willa at aquaticsinfo@reston.org.

Historic Trust Annual Meeting

Reston Museum, 1639 Washington Plaza, Lake Anne Village Center.
All are welcome to attend the annual meeting of Reston Historic Trust (RHT) to hear a review of the past year's activities, and for the election of board members. A January art show and sale exhibit reception will follow the meeting. Refreshments will be served.

Winter is a great time to explore the galaxy. Learn about celestial objects that are now in view. Then head to the boat ramp at Lake Audubon Pool to check out the stars over the water. Hot cocoa will be provided.

Festival Planning Committee The 2012 Reston Festival committee is looking for energetic volunteers to help plan this great community event, which will be held at Reston Town Center on Saturday, July 14 and Sunday, July 15, 2012. This committee offers you the opportunity to make a difference in your community and have a lot of fun in the process.
