May 2012

Greetings!

Thank you for your continued interest in our monthly eNews.
Lymphedema and Diabetes

Previously Dr. Reid wrote an article on this topic.  We have received several inquiries under our "Ask a Question" feature. While this feature is not intended for medical advice and we always refer patients back to their primary health care provider for clinical advice, we felt it would be a good topic to revisit in eNews.

Excerpt below:

Patients with lymphedema have leakage of lymphatic fluid into the tissue causing swelling and connective tissue damage and increased risk of infection. While diabetes generally causes damage to the arteries and capillaries, lymphedema is the result of damage to the lymphatic system. Together, these diseases result in damage to both the arterial and lymphatic systems and both lead to damage to the subcutaneous tissue, connective tissue and skin. The result is increased swelling, decreased levels of oxygen in the skin and connective tissue and susceptibility to infection.

 Ask Kelly

Dear Kelly,

My mother has lymphedema following breast cancer and her physician recommended a ReidSleeve.  She has Aetna insurance and we do not know the next step to take, can you guide us?

Sincerely  Jane

Dear Jane,

The first step we would take is to let us verify the insurance coverage so we can better direct you from there.  We have several authorized distributors that are contracted with Aetna and in order to refer you to the best provider, we would want to find out which Aetna plan your mother is currently enrolled with.  You may call us with the information toll free, 1-800-283-3362 (1-800-29-Edema) or you can follow this link and fill out our on-line verification form and an insurance billing specialists will get back to you in 24-48 hours.http://lymphedema.com/billing.htm

We check the insurance without any obligation to you. This helps us either find you the best referral or provide you with accurate coverage details to assist you in making the best decisions.

Thank you for your question and we look forward to assisting you!
Sincerely,
Kelly
