Orange County CSS Research Unit Studies Appropriate Orders in California
By Mark Takayesu, Administrative Manager I, Orange County CSS

One of the major themes discussed at the 2011 CSDA Annual Child Support Training Conference & Expo affecting the long-term financial well-being of children is the setting of appropriate orders. Under Director Steve Eldred's direction, the Research Unit for the Orange County Department of Child Support Services conducted a statewide study to determine the level of an appropriate order that maximizes collections for children, produces the highest level of compliance, and prevents arrears from growing. The findings of this study were presented at this year's conference at a workshop titled "How Do Child Support Orders Affect Payments and Compliance?"

"In times of war, exhausted combat units requiring time to rest and recover were removed from the battlefields to a place of relative security and safety. At secure base camp areas, troops were able to take care of personal hygiene, get clean uniforms, enjoy warm meals, receive medical and dental care, mail and receive letters, and enjoy the camaraderie of friends in a safe environment."

County Designs New Outreach Poster
By Allan Woodworth, Lead Attorney, Humboldt County DCSS

flyer
At a recent meeting regarding outreach in Humboldt County it was decided that the posters available for advertising the department's services were not as effective as they could be. The department decided to design a simple, but eye-catching, poster that would stand out from other posters, clearly convey it was for child support, and contain all of the necessary information to contact the department.

It was both a privilege and an honor to be selected and represent the San Bernardino County Department of Child Support Services at the 2011 Annual CSDA Conference in Sacramento.  Attending the Conference allowed us to see firsthand what many of our neighboring counties are doing to better their business practices, improve FPMs, and provide superior customer service.  Additionally, we had the opportunity to hear state's vision for the Child Support program and hear how our work impacts families throughout the state.

I wish to thank the Child Support Directors Association for making the CFSC/CSDA training scholarship available to myself and other child support professionals. I feel so fortunate to have been chosen as a recipient. The conference was a fruitful experience. It was inspiring to listen to the plenary session speakers who were so knowledgeable in their respective fields and familiar with today's issues facing the child support program.

I am very thankful to have had the opportunity to attend such an event that exhibited the dedication and perseverance of CSDA, all the LCSAs and their partners in helping families to a promising future.  The conference provided me the opportunity to see and be exposed to such a wide array of resources, ideas, tools and information I otherwise would not necessarily have the possibility to experience.

Presenting the check to the Los Angeles County Children's Trust Fund

This is my second year attending the CSDA conference.  Observing different workshops provided me with a knowledge and perspective of the child support process that I currently knew little about.  Obtaining this knowledge and gaining these new perspectives is a great benefit in my professional development along with my customers, both internally and externally.  That is because, with more knowledge of how the child support process operates, I can do more to help my customers.

Bummed that I wasn't selected in my office drawing to attend the conference, I was thrilled when I saw there was a second chance option available. When I got confirmation that I was a recipient of one of the CSDA conference scholarships, I had to do a double take reading the email. YESSS! I was so excited!
