News & Information From El Paso County Medical Society

October 2011

Greetings!

EPCMS is moving forward into a new year, and our Board of Directors takes up a new set of challenges.  What's new is what we have for you in this issue.Top

New Leadership at EPCMS
Olivier, Khan and Reasoner look to the future
132nd president of EPCMS
Brian Olivier, M.D.

To many, El Paso County Medical Society is a notice, bulletin, news, event or meeting that arrives, unbidden, to your daily routine. In actuality, EPCMS is an organization of your peers endlessly researching and considering the evolving landscape of health care in order to bring informed decisions to the society and its members.

The primary decision maker at EPCMS is the Board of Directors. Composed of physicians, the EPCMS Board of Directors is an elected body charged with oversight and leadership of the organization. When rumors circulated years ago that Kaiser Permanente was going to open clinics in the Springs, the EPCMS Board of Directors had Kaiser leadership at a meeting to discuss and mitigate the impact on local physicians. Local physicians felt overwhelmed by health reform, and the EPCMS Board of Directors brought a series of programs to the community to answer questions and plot the future.

Board members are recruited from the membership of the society by the Nominating Committee, chaired by the Secretary of the Board. Elections are held during the May Business Meeting of the society in conjunction with the Physician Connection. Those who are elected to the Board are installed in office during the September Business Meeting.

Brian Olivier, M.D., a physician with Colorado Springs Health Partners, became the 132nd President of the EPCMS Board of Directors during EPCMS' Business Meeting on September 21, 2011. During his term, Dr. Olivier hopes to place more focus and resources on providers, facilitate our Physician Connection meetings becoming a time for professional networking and fellowship, and encourage providers to discover new venues, options and solutions to focus on the practice of their craft. "History has chosen us," he said in his first address to the membership, emphasizing that his term will be about a physician-focused future for EPCMS and health care as things change rapidly around us. "We are the health care delivery system of the future. We have what it takes to build it well."

At this same time the preceding president, Tanweer Khan, M.D. of Colorado Springs Imaging, stepped into the position of Immediate Past President. Dr. Khan will continue his service on the EPCMS Board of Directors for an additional year, bringing continuity and ongoing leadership to the Board in this new role. All EPCMS President's serve on the Board of Directors for a total of three terms: one year as President Elect, one year as President, and the final year as Immediate Past President.

John Reasoner, M.D., with Emergicare, took up the mantle of President Elect at this time, beginning his three year term. David W.M. Ross, D.O., was installed as Vice President, and Michelle Hor, M.D., and Steven Barrick, D.O., returned to the Board as Secretary and Treasurer, respectively.

Rounding out the 2011-2012 board of directors are:

Bernadette Albanese, M.D., El Paso County Public Health

Greg Baron, M.D., Emeritus Member

Patrick Faricy, M.D., Acute Care Liaison

Ripley Hollister, M.D., CMS Board Representative

Trent Hovenga, M.D., Member At Large

Jeffrey Moody, M.D., CMS Board Representative

Jeffrey Oram-Smith, M.D. Acute Care Liaison

Nicholas Piantanida, M.D., Military Liaison

Greg Sharp, M.D., Senior Delegate

Michael Welch, D.O., CMS Board Representative

These leaders will take office during a time of challenge and opportunity for the medical community as we look down the road to changes in payment and practice reform.  The society will also see a significant change as their long-time CEO, Carol Walker, retires from the medical society this January. Ms. Walker says that though this is the end of her years as CEO, she expects to keep involved in the society in other ways as she begins this new chapter of her professional life.
