Alissa Graff, Wow's summer intern, is about to start her junior year at Hampshire College in Amherst, Mass. During the school year, she is an intern in Hampshire's admissions office. Here are some of Alissa's tips:

  • Be a school investigator. Research each school that interests you. If you apply blindly to schools, the admissions counselors will know. By researching them ahead of time, you can make sure you want to apply. Read more.

Ace the ACT Writing Test 

 

ACT logoAre you taking the ACT on Sept. 9? On August 28, 7-9 p.m., Wow will host an interactive workshop to prepare students for success on the writing portion of the ACT.

 

You will learn: 

  • How to read and evaluate the prompt
  • How to organize your thoughts
  • Tips for writing quickly, clearly and effectively
  • Common mistakes and how to avoid them

You will also discuss strategies and complete test-related activities, including one full, timed writing test.

NCF logoIn a recent newsletter, we told you about programs sponsored by Colleges That Change Lives that help connect students with appropriate colleges. The National Association for College Admission Counseling also offers resources for your college search.
 
NACAC sponsors free National College Fairs and Performing and Visual Arts College Fairs that allow students to meet directly with admissions representatives from a number of colleges and universities. Fairs are held in spring and fall. See the fall schedule here. 
Wow Them With Your College Essay

 

Learn how to turn everyday experiences into compelling stories that will catch the attention of admissions officers and help you stand out from the crowd. Through hands-on writing exercises, students will explore potential topics, brainstorm key details and begin writing a strong first draft.  Bring a notebook and pen, and come prepared to write!
