RE/MAX
"Delivering Excellence"September 2012

Greetings!

The weather may be cooling off as schedules shift into back-to-school mode, but the market hasn't noticeably cooled that much. I've had a busy summer meeting with lots of prospective Buyers and Sellers. Interest in finding the right home remains high.

Although most of your summer travel is now behind you (aside from a possible jaunt or two in the last remaining weekends of the official summer), it's always a good time to learn about new ways to save on gas when you're on the road. Read here to get caught up on the latest methods of conserving gas and maximizing auto efficiency.

Have you heard a rumor circulating that one of the provisions of "Obamacare" health care legislation will create a 3.8% Medicare tax on real estate transactions? This claim is a mixture of both true and false information. See why here.

My successful Home Buyers Workshop series will be starting up again in October, so plan to attend one this fall. Our guest list is already filling up, so don't wait! See below for details.

Please forward this e-newsletter to friends, colleagues, or family members, and don't forget to check out my other informational resources on my blog, Facebook page, YouTube channel, and website!

Oh by the way, if you know of anyone thinking of buying or selling a home who would benefit from the level of service I provide, just give me a call with their contact information. I'll be happy to follow up and take special care of them.

Best,

Connie White

Although rising gas prices may have put your autumn road trip planning on hold, there are ways to save money at the pump while you're traveling.

* Look for deals. Many hotels offer gas cards or rebates to entice guests, as do the tourism boards of many travel destinations. Check the website of your hotel or destination to explore the discounts available.

* Find cheap gas before you go! Go to www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/gasprices, www.gasbuddy.com, or www.gaspricewatch.com for the latest gas prices in your neighborhood and around the country. If you have a membership with Costco or Sam's Club, plan to purchase gas at these warehouse shopping clubs along your route.

* Know where you're going. The advent of online trip planners and GPS allow you to plan every mile of your trip. As a result, the chances of getting lost are diminished, saving time, money, and fuel.

* Fuel up at rest areas where there are clusters of gas stations. Competition works in your favor as the gas stations try to lure customers with lower prices.

* Conserve fuel. The easiest way to save a few pennies is to improve your car's fuel efficiency. Keep a constant speed, avoid sudden stops, and ensure that your vehicle is in tip-top condition before you embark on your journey.

BuyReal Estate Tax: Fact or Fiction?

true or false There's been a rumor circulating that one of the provisions of "Obama-care" health care legislation will create a 3.8% Medicare tax on real estate transactions. You may be wondering yourself if this is true.

Here are the facts, according to Snopes:

This claim is a mixture
of both true and false information.

False - Health care legislation imposes a 3.8% tax on all home sales.
True - Health care legislation imposes a 3.8% transaction tax on profits over the capital gains threshold.

This is not a sales tax, nor does it apply to most real estate transactions. Here is the truth:

  • The Medicare tax will be imposed only on individuals with an income above $200,000 and couples with a joint income of more than $250,000, which excludes about 97% of all U.S. households.
  • The tax will not be assessed on every house sale, but only on real estate transactions that produce profits over a specified dollar amount.
  • This tax is aimed at the "high earners". If you do not fall into that category, you will not pay any extra taxes upon the sale of your home.

Think That Summer Is the Best Time
to Travel?
Think Again!

autumn travel

School calendars used to dictate the time for our family to travel. Time with the kids - heading to New Hampshire to Story Land or to Disney in February.

However, times have changed: our children have grown, and my husband is retired. We now enjoy the freedom to plan vacations in the fall. For us, a beautiful time to travel - fewer crowds.

We don't go far. Living on the South Shore of Massachusetts provides us with lots of choices - a day trip to so many beautiful spots. Some of our favorites: Newport, Rhode Island; Rockport, MA; Chatham on Cape Cod; and Ogunquit, Maine.

We enjoy the scenic drive, walking hand in hand through quiet streets, stopping at a local restaurant for lunch - checking out their fare for the day, shopping for a memento of this day, and the drive home memorializing "what was special about today".

Fall ahead! Haven't checked Farmer's Almanac for its prediction. My forecast: I'm in for the beauty of the fall season. A day trip here! A day trip there!
