PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Fall has arrived and our annual Octoberfest is this Wednesday, October 10th.  Invite a guest or two and join us for the annual autumn beer tasting hosted by Dan Naes, an assistant Brewmaster at Anheuser-Busch.  In addition, City Council President Bill Bishop will address the matter of revising currently outdated economic policies that hinder progress in our community.  You don't want to miss the SBMC meeting this week!

The last couple of weeks have been very exciting for our club.  Many of our members have contributed to the success of our club's latest events, including the Car Show and the Youth Achiever Program. Without our sponsors and volunteers, fundraising events like these would be impossible to achieve.  My special thanks to all of you for your contribution and support!

Quote of the week: "Volunteering is the ultimate exercise in democracy.  You vote in elections once every four years, but when you volunteer, you vote every day about the kind of community you want to live in".  For 80 years, members of our club have been volunteering and positively impacting our community. Let's keep up the good work and continue having fun along the way!  Have a great week and I look forward to seeing you on Wednesday.

Galina Schott,

2012 SBMC President

SBMC 80th ANNIVERSARY by Angie Tekin

Happy Birthday, SBMC! As you know, we are celebrating our 80th Anniversary which is really a birthday.
Who else was 'born' in 1932? -- check this out: Little Richard ~ Johnny Cash ~ Charlie Rich ~ John Updike ~ Petula Clark ~ Patsy Cline ~ Jenny Craig  ~Casey Kasem~Ted Kennedy ~ Sonny Liston  ~Loretta Lynn ~ Omar Sharif   ~ Elizabeth Taylor ~ Robert Vaughn.

We may not be as famous as these folks; however, we have outlived most of them.  What a tribute to the mission of the Southside Business Men's Club that we have had the stamina to survive depressions, recessions, wars, political upheaval, geographic changes, financial challenges, technological advances and challenges as well as having withstood the test of time.

It appears that we are gaining strength as the years roll by, and not diminishing as with other groups. We can be proud that we are still breaking new ground and meeting (and even exceeding) the mission of our Club.  Blow out a few candles and make a few big wishes for you, the SBMC membership, you deserve it!  Happy 80th Birthday!

MEMBERSHIP CORNER

As we begin the 4th quarter of the year, we evaluate what we need to do in our businesses to meet the goals we set for 2012. SBMC membership is the same; our goal for the year was to welcome over 100 new members. As of this writing, we need 11 corporate and 14 individual memberships to meet our goal. This is very achievable in 3 months' time if we work together.  Don't forget, we're having a contest to see who can bring in the most new members by the end of the year, with a $1,000 cash prize!

We have many exciting activities coming up, making it fun and easy for new members to get involved. Let's make the most of our final months of the year--invite guests (get recognized at the meetings as you introduce them!), encourage your colleagues to join, get more involved and enjoy the camaraderie of members new and old. As the club grows and thrives, we all have more opportunities to make new friends and business alliances.

SBMC VETERAN'S DAY FLOAT - OCTOBER 9th

We have been meeting every Tuesday starting at 5:30pm to build the SBMC Float for the Veteran's Day Parade.  Same location as last year: Sunnyland Roofing - 4115 University Blvd West, use the entrance under the overpass.  BYOB, but ice and set ups will be available.

This year, we are building a special float, proudly displaying the Club's 80-years of Service to our Community.  Please join us this Tuesday, 10/9 and help us with this important project.  If you have questions or need directions, please call John Hamel at 887-6805 or e-mail him at [email protected].

SBMC CAR SHOW by Desi Desiderio, Chairman

The 2nd Annual SBMC Car Show was a tremendous success. We surpassed our budgeted goal of $1,500 by raising $2,539.

Our car show made the newspaper!  The show was mentioned in Saturday's Drive section of the Florida Times Union.  To explore more than 60 photos from the show, go to firstcoastgears.com

First, a special thank you to the car show committee with Mike Aselton, Cameron Naugle, Harry Peltz, Phil Rosebrock, Dee Kirby, and chairman Desi Desiderio.

Additionally, a big thank you to the sponsors who stepped up in an incredible way: our event sponsor Mike Dungy with Nimnicht Chevrolet Fleet Sales; our gold sponsors Rollin Sound at the Avenues and 12 Volt LEDHID; and our silver sponsors, Scott Shilbrack with Luten Insurance, Mary Pat Stock with Costco, and Coast Cycle Consignment.

There were also two members who brought multiple cars and/or contributed above and beyond the normal expectations, so a special thank you to Tom Harris, and Erin Eiras with Investra Financial.

In addition, we had huge support within our club to provide numerous high quality items for our silent auction, which was put together and planned by Mary Jury with Hands on Jacksonville. The following members contributed goods and/or services to the auction: Julie Wesling from Holistic Massage Therapies, Kimberly Clarke from Kimberly Clarke Salon, Rene Carter from Family Abbey Carpet & Floor, John Davoli from Metro Diner, Ron Mallet from Thigpen Heating & Cooling, Tom Whicher from PRP Wine International, Alan Worley and Terry Rich from Money Pages, Nico Hogeveen from GolfTEC, Mary Fisher from Mary Fisher Design, Hank Duckworth from Duckworth Construction, Belinda Mitchell from Crystal Pool Service LLC., Keith Segars from American Transmission, Nancy Bennett from Living Image Studio, Mary Pat Stock from Costco, Linda Daniel Ducat from Sunbeam Autobody, Pamela Wiltegen from Far Fetched Tales Dog Training, Carter Funk from Delux Cleaners, Angie Tekin from Oasis Staffing, and Howard Wolpoff from 1010XL.

Thanks to all who supported the event, including members who brought their cars to the event, people who bid on the auctions, and all members who attended the event. Lastly, a very special thank you to all of the club officers for their support throughout the event.
