PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

In 1932 two organizations were born -- the Southside Business Men's Club and Augusta National Golf Club.  A couple of weeks ago we had the SBMC Past Presidents day and we heard some interesting facts about our club's history.  During the program, Past President AJ Pionessa said that one of the best things the SBMC has done is to admit women to the Club.  That decision was made in 1996 and we continue taking pride in impacting our community in positive ways.

It's obvious that when it comes to membership decisions, the SBMC has been more progressive then other clubs in the country, including Augusta National Golf Club.  Only last month, for the first time in its 80-year history, Augusta National GC has added its first female members - former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and business executive Darla Moore. Augusta National takes pride in its role as a leader in golf circles, and they finally realized that they could not effectively fill the role while telling women they don't belong.

Quote of the week: "Something which we think is impossible now is not impossible in another decade."  -- Constance Baker Motley (First African American Woman in the US to become a Federal Judge)

MEMBERSHIP CORNER

This week ushers in the first day of autumn. The days are getting noticeably shorter, and we've had a taste of cooler, dryer weather. Farmers are beginning to harvest - do you ever think about how you will "harvest" business-related bounty, like benefits of Southside Business Men's Club membership? If you "sow" time in meetings, volunteering and socials, you will reap many rewards in friendships, referrals and new business. And bringing in new members is like planting seeds for future growth.

So far we have welcomed 80 new members this year!  We can reach our goal of 100 new members in 2012 if we work together and finish the year strong. (Don't forget, we're having a contest to see who can bring in the most new members by the end of the year, with a $1,000 cash prize!)  The best part is, it's not a chore, like raking leaves or re-mulching your garden, bringing guests and participating in events is fun!  This Wednesday we'll have New Member Orientation at 11:30am at SJCC, and induct new members at our lunch meeting -- please welcome our newest members and help them get involved.  As the club grows bigger and stronger, everyone yields healthy benefits.

2012 SBMC Membership Co-Chair

MEET-A-MEMBER

A big thanks to Annie Houghton and Fidelity Bank for hosting a very well-attended and successful Meet-A-Member on Thursday, September 13th at her new branch on Baymeadows Road!

Anthony's Catering was contracted to provide the delicious food; the mashed potato bar was a big hit.  Most importantly, bank president Palmer Proctor, who came down from the Atlanta HQ, chose to donate the event's ticket sales ($395), to our SBMC YAP. Once again, thanks to Annie and her staff who made this an event to remember.

Our next Meet-A-Member event will be November 15th, at Sabrina Ebel's Florida Backyard location on Philips Hwy.
