PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Many thanks to Barbara Buzby and Annie Houghton for organizing a very special Past Presidents' Day last Wednesday.  Our members and guests enjoyed an exciting program.  We heard funny and heartwarming stories from four Past Presidents: AJ Pionessa, Gene Bushor, C. Lee Daniel, and Belinda Mitchell.  The Past Presidents in attendance received a copy of the Proclamation made by Mayor Alvin Brown declaring September 5th, 2012 the Southside Business Men's Club Past Presidents' Day in the city of Jacksonville.

As we celebrate our Club's 80th Anniversary, we reflect on our past history and accomplishments with pride and gratitude to all who served before us.  For many years, our Club has worked hard for the improvement and betterment of Jacksonville.  This year, we've been supporting projects our Club has sponsored in the past and keeping our core values and traditions close to our hearts.  We are having a strong and exciting year and I want to thank our Past Presidents for their support, commitment, and dedication to the SBMC.

Quote of the week: "Men make history and not the other way around. In periods where there is no leadership, society stands still.  Progress occurs when courageous, skillful leaders seize the opportunity to change things for the better." - Harry Truman

Galina Schott,

2012 SBMC President

MEMBERSHIP CORNER

As summer comes to an end, we enter another growing season not only for farmers but for anyone in business. Fall is a time to replant fields and rejuvenate relationships. Your friends, vendors and even competitors are doing it too. This is a great time to reach out to any of them and invite them to join us for lunch and networking with the SBMC. Every invitation I have made has been well received. Even if they are unable to attend, they will appreciate your gesture and remember your willingness to reach out and include them. These kinds of steps will help to grow the club but also help you grow both personally and professionally. As the weather cools off, keep thinking about what you can do and whom you can invite to take part in our club alongside the rest of us. Most of all, our beloved city of Jacksonville will stand to reap the benefits and she is great about sharing her gains with all of us.

SBMC CAR SHOW -- SEPTEMBER 29th

How would you like to be able to connect with 50-100 classic car owners?  It's simple - a little gift card, a pen, a coozie or some kind of neat widget that advertises your business in our goodie bags that go to every participant in our 2nd Annual SBMC Car Show at Hooters at Tinseltown.

Want to spend the day with these same people?  For as little as $50 you can have a 10'x10' area to set up a booth.  It was a roaring success last year, so fire up your engines and motor on over on September 29th from 10am - 2pm.

For more information email Desi Desiderio at [email protected]

Interesting Facts about the U.S. Presidents

During our last meeting, we heard some interesting facts about our club's history from four of our Past Presidents.  Here are some interesting facts about the United States Presidents:

  1. Abraham Lincoln is the only U.S. president who was also a licensed bartender. He was co-owner of Berry and Lincoln, a saloon in Springfield, Illinois
  2. The only president to be unanimously elected was George Washington. He also refused to accept his presidential salary, which was $25,000 a year.
  3. "Teddy Bears" were so named when Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt refused to shoot a small bear cub one day. The incident was reported in the news, which inspired a toy manufacture to come out with the cute stuffed animals.
  4. George Washington never lived in the White House. The capital was actually located in Philadelphia and other cities when Washington was president. He is also the only president who didn't represent a political party.
  5. Richard Nixon was the first president to visit all 50 states and the first to visit China. He is the only president to resign.
  6. George Washington made the shortest inauguration speech on record-133 words and less than two minutes long.
  7. William Henry Harrison holds the record for the longest inauguration speech in history at 8,578 words long and one hour and 40 minutes. Unfortunately, he gave the speech during bad weather and a month later, he was dead from pneumonia, making his the shortest presidency on record.
  8. Three presidents died on July 4th: Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and James Monroe.
  9. The three best known Western names in China are Jesus Christ, Elvis Presley, and Richard Nixon.
  10. Warren Harding was the first president to own a radio, the first to make speech over the radio, and the first to ride to his inauguration in a car. When women got the right to vote, he was the first president they could elect.
  11. JFK was the first Roman Catholic to be president, the first Boy Scout to become president, and the first president to be born in the twentieth century.
