Elmer Davis once said "This nation will remain the land of the free only so long as it is the home of the brave." Our club has a strong tradition of honoring our military, both past and present, and it is important for us to come together and express our appreciation and gratitude. Last week, during our Annual Military Appreciation luncheon, we honored and thanked members of our armed forces for their role in protecting our freedoms.
Post Command Sergeant Major James Bateman spoke to us about the history of Camp Blanding and introduced his honoree, Sergeant Gregory Fiorentino, 2012 NCO of the Year. The NCO is often referred to as "the backbone" of the armed services, as they are the primary and most visible leaders for most military personnel. Phil Rosebrock, our program chairman, presented an award plaque to Sgt. Fiorentino.
During the program, our own John Hamel introduced Chris Rick, Director of the Track Program in Jacksonville. Chris explained that the Program provides mentoring, direction and support for Wounded Warriors and introduced two recent graduates - Richard Hicks III and Christian Willard. On behalf of the SBMC, John presented a $500 award to each the Wounded Warrior Project Honorees.
John is a Past President of the Jacksonville Elks Lodge #221, Florida's first Elks Lodge established in 1891. John's guest, Scott Wilson, is the current President of the Lodge. Due to a generous donation from the Elks National Foundation, they were able to donate the money to our charity - the Veterans Independence Project (VIP), which supports veterans in our community.
The grant funded the two awards and will help support the "Salute" to Veterans Day event we will host at the Jacksonville Landing on Saturday, November 10, 2012. We appreciate their organization for all they do to support children and veterans in North Florida and I want to thank Phil Rosebrock and John Hamel for organizing a very special program for our members and guests.
Quote of the week: "America's fighting men and women sacrifice much to ensure that our great nation stays free. We owe a debt of gratitude to the soldiers that have paid the ultimate price for this cause, as well as for those who are blessed enough to return from the battlefield unscathed." -- Allen Boyd.

Every week we are all encouraged to do business with each other and last week the SBMC did business with one of its members, Gina Hengst with Dave and Buster's. Winners of the recent membership contest enjoyed the Happy Hour celebration at D&B. Congratulations to our winners Mike Aselton, Lisa Almeida, Eric Horn, Jepp Walter, Ramona Baldwin, Hank Duckworth, Mark Wilkinson, Julie Clements, Bob McKenzie, Kim Clarke, Julie Wesling and Harry Peltz.
Dave and Buster's is always a blast but they really rolled out the red carpet for us. If you're not familiar or have not been in a while, it is a wonderful restaurant and bar perfectly blended with a game emporium.
We were set up in a semi-private room with our own beautiful pool table and buffet. As always, the food was great, the service fast and friendly and the atmosphere classy but fun. Gina has been a great member and is always happy to support our club.
Benefits of our membership include doing business with other members AND getting to know each other better in a fun atmosphere as we celebrate the successes of our club. Let's continue to grow, have fun, and make a positive difference in our community!

Want to spend the day with these same people? For as little as $50 you can have a 10'x10' area to set up a booth. It was a roaring success last year, so fire up your engines and motor on over on September 29th from 10am - 2pm.
