PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

As many of you know, the SBMC Youth Achiever Program started in 1994 by past presidents Fred Harford and Gene Bushor. For many years, our Club has been raising money for a good cause and awarding scholarships to the brightest young people in our community.

We had a special meeting last week and I'd like to thank Howard Caplan, the Chairman of our Scholarship committee and his entire team for selecting strong candidates to be awarded the YAP and the Pauline Smith Scholarships.  It was exciting to witness the results of our club's charitable work when Howard presented the Youth Achiever Program scholarships to the following recipients:

  • Justina Freeman - a new recipient of a $1,500 YAP scholarship, which she will use to attend JU.
  • Jasmin Tahirovic - a new recipient of a $1,500 YAP scholarship, which he will use to attend UF.
  • Paul Huang - a renewal (4th year) recipient of a $1,500 YAP scholarship, which he will use to continue attending UF.
  • Cheyanne Kaufmann - a renewal (2nd year) recipient of a $1,500 YAP scholarship, which she will use to continue attending FSCJ.

It is always a great meeting for us when Pauline Smith is our special guest.  She attended our meeting last week because Richard Marks was awarded the Pauline Smith Scholarship.  He expressed his gratitude for receiving a $2,000 scholarship and said that he will be using the money to continue attending UNF and for law school.

Congratulations to all the recipients and thank you again to the 2012 Scholarship Committee for their diligent work.

Quote of the week: "We cannot always build the future for our youth, but we can build our youth for the future." -  Franklin Roosevelt

Have a great week and I look forward to seeing you on Wednesday.

Galina Schott,

2012 SBMC President

MEMBERSHIP CORNER

Our club continues to grow not only in terms of membership but just as importantly in terms of reach and ability to impact the city we love. We are having one of our best years ever for growing our group and making a real difference to Jacksonville and its residents. Each week brings another opportunity to establish a business connection, make a new friend, or find a way to get involved and help out. Our last contest was a huge success and we are ready for our BIGGEST and BEST Membership Contest of the year.

We will be counting new members that joined the club from January of this year through this coming November to determine our winner.  A few ideas were thrown around for a Grand Prize but the incentive that made the most sense is the one we knew nobody would be re-gifting: CASH!  So, the member that brings in the most new members for this 11 month stretch of time will receive $1,000 dollars to use as they see fit. Good luck, and let's get the invitations going!
