The 2012 Summer Olympics in London got under way last Friday. I watched the Opening Ceremony, titled "Isles of Wonder", and it was spectacular. The Olympic Games are considered to be the world's foremost sports competition and more than 200 nations participate.
For the first time in U.S. Olympic history, there will be more female athletes competing than men. The 530-member team, comprised of 269 women and 261 men, will be competing in 25 sports. Like many sports fans, I will be cheering for Team USA, our best athletes, who put in the time and effort it takes to compete at the highest level against the greatest athletes in the world.
Last week, when I was reminded of the three core values of the Olympic Movement, I thought of the Southside Business Men's Club. The values of excellence, friendship and respect are an inspiration both at individual and organizational levels. For 80 years, our Club has been striving for excellence, encouraging friendship among its members, and gaining respect from many in our community.
Quote of the week: "The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph, but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered, but to have fought well." -- The Olympic Creed
Have a great week and I look forward to seeing you on Wednesday.
Galina Schott,
2012 SBMC President |
BOARD MEMBER PROFILE -- Rene' Carter |
Things you may or may not know about our Board Member, Rene' Carter:
- The short haired flooring girl pretty much sums it up.
- Jacksonville born and raised.
- Being an only child meant flooring was my future.
- After high school, I was thrown into the third generation business to learn the ropes and here we are 25 years later.
- I have a beautiful daughter named Amanda who just finished teaching her first year of kindergarten. She started grad school and will be teaching next year, so I guess flooring is not in her future.....smart girl.
- After a long marriage of thinking it's not too bad, you realize it's wasn't too good. Divorce led to independence which led to new beginnings.
- This Westside girl did a crazy move to the beach and met lots of new people.
- My involvement with SBMC has allowed me to meet and do business with some amazing men and women.
- In the process of meeting lots of new people... I met the right person. I have been dating Mr. Right for three years and the engagement ring was slipped onto the finger a couple of months ago.
- Goodbye to the Mrs. Carter and hello to the Mrs. Zook. Does anybody know how to write a "Z" in cursive?

We are close to being able to announce the date, time and location of the happy hour celebration for the May/June membership "competition." We are planning an exciting membership contest later this year, so stay tuned! But remember, the real joy is bringing friends and colleagues to the meetings to introduce them to our organization.
Bringing a guest is a great way for YOU to stand up and be recognized as well. And I've never heard anyone say that they didn't have a nice time or they wish they hadn't attended. We are a great club, made up of outstanding members! So bring guests when you can, encourage them to join when appropriate, and we'll continue to be the best business club in Jacksonville.

SBMC HOLIDAY GALA -- DECEMBER 8th |
Everyone loves the SBMC HOLIDAY GALA, and as this is the Club's 80th Anniversary, our event on December 8th will be very special!
In the past, Club members Donn Carr and Hillary Carpenter, have stepped up and made Bar Sponsor donations. So far this year,
Nancy Bennett of Living Image Photography and
Howard Caplan, Esq., of Lewis, Longman & Walker, P.A. have generously donated to the event. However, there is still more to do.
If anyone has the ability left in this year's budget, we would greatly appreciate any help in this regard. Your generosity will be mentioned on the invitations, before and during the event itself.
Tim Howe,
2012 SBMC 4th Vice President |
