Last week, our guest speaker Kevin Monahan talked to us about the services offered by the Small Business Development Center at UNF. To continue with the subject of small businesses, I would like to share with you the latest message from Florida's Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater: " I often say that small businesses are the backbone of Florida's economy, and to me, it isn't just a good catch phrase. Small businesses are the heart of Florida's economic lifeblood. Approximately 2.2 million small businesses, making up nearly 90 percent of the state's employers, employ 6.85 million Floridians every year. Being such a large part of the state's economy, these businesses are central to Florida's health and well-being. It is vital that our small business community continues to grow, prosper and remain in Florida. While we continue to see positive trends in business and employment growth, I know we still have a long way to go to ensure our small business community is thriving, not just today, but 10, 20, 30 years down the road. Florida is on the right track, and I am confident that we will continue to see a steady trend toward growth. Florida had one of the largest increases in the country in entrepreneurial activity over the past decade, and it is my goal to nurture our business community and the entrepreneurial spirit. More positive signs that our economy is trending upwards: in early May, Florida moved from third to second in Chief Executive Magazine's "best place to do business" survey. When a state's business community thrives, so does its economy".
In addition, Walt Disney made the announcement last Tuesday that it will begin using JAXPORT, rather than Savannah, to ship most of its merchandise for its Central Florida theme parks and hotels. - It is good news for Florida, for Jacksonville, and for all of us. Have a great week and I look forward to seeing you on Wednesday.

MEMBERSHIP CORNER |
I recently attended a seminar at the Small Business Development Center called "Marketing 101". The instructor would sometimes offer individual advice to an attendee, including tips on networking. - She told one person he should join the Chamber, she told me I should go to the Riverside Arts Market with a stack of business cards, and so on. One attendee was told he would not likely do well at the Chamber, but he should definitely check out the Southside Business Men's Club (he has since joined!). It made me feel proud of our organization, that we are recognized as the ideal fit for certain business persons and we are being recommended by leaders in the community. Our club is great and it gets even better as we grow our membership and welcome new people that each of us can network with, volunteer with, and become friends with.
I encourage you to bring guests and encourage guests to join as members. Any member whose guest joins in the month of May or June is invited to participate in a celebratory happy hour (a $250 prize from SBMC), location and date to be announced.
Way to go Team Scott AND Team Julie!

2012 SBMC CIVIC AFFAIRS COMMITTEE |
A few weeks ago, Council President-Designate Bill Bishop brought us up to speed on the "State of the City" from his perspective. At that same meeting a flyer was passed around where Bill was looking for feedback from SBMC members asking:
- What can/should the city do to improve the ease of conducting business in Jacksonville?
- What problems are hindering your ability to do business that can be impacted at the City Council Level?
If you missed that meeting, we encourage you to participate and respond. Please email us at [email protected] to ensure your voice is heard. We appreciate your participation. |
SERGEANT AT ARMS - PATRICK HEATHERINGTON |
In order for us and San Jose Country Club to properly prepare for the SBMC meeting, we ask you to RSVP and let us know if you intend to have lunch. This will ensure that SJCC has proper seating and enough food for our group. RSVP to [email protected].
If you feel called to lead our meeting in the Invocation or the Pledge of Allegiance, please email [email protected]. |
